Puttur: Tanker-truck accident disrupts traffic on Shiradi Ghat stretch

Daijiworld Media Network – Puttur (SP)

Puttur, Jun 21: At around 6 am on Saturday June 21, a tanker moving towards Mangalore and a truck coming from the opposite direction collided with each other at Kempu Hole in Shiradi Ghat stretch of national highway 75. As a result, traffic between Mangalore and Bangalore came to a grinding halt.

Long lines of vehicles were formed on both sides of the accident spot. As the road got blocked, policemen had a trying time to control the traffic and lend some semblance of orderliness. As the vehicles got stranded for several hours, some opted to take a detour and move to Bangalore via Mysore.

Although both the vehicles suffered damages in the accident, no loss of lives was reported. The drivers and cleaners of the two vehicles sustained minor injuries, it is learnt.

Reckless driving of heavy vehicles, particularly tankers moving on this Ghat section in spite of a number of accidents and repeated warnings, came in for bitter criticism by locals and drivers of stranded vehicles alike.

Normalcy was restored and the road was cleared for traffic after several hours, after both the vehicles were moved aside.

Things like this could merely be avoided if we set our safety as a priority. Let us be concern with our safety. Be alert and witty when it comes to protecting ourselves. My friend told me with this panic button service and it fits in my security purposes need. I feel protected all the time because I know in a single press of a panic button massive response or help from my family or 911 will come.

Authorities should ban the movement of heavy trucks on Ghats during night time to avoid inconvenience to the passengers travelling in buses and their own vehicles. They should fix 6 am to 6 pm timings to the heavy truck movement and even if something goes wrong, at least authorities and local garage people are available to fast clear the road. Night time, in the absence of light it is dangerous as well as worrying to truck drivers as well as to other passengers travelling in different vehicles.

I myself have been a victim of such traffic in Shiradi. Everything comes to a grind halt standstill once an accident happens, from midnight to dawn. Once the mess is cleared by crane, police arrives, you have to resume the journey. CET students, office goers, interview candidates have their bad days. I being a regular traveller to Bangalore, see this more often and most times this news goes unreported.

Central Govt is planning to give permanent solution to this problem. Discussion is going on whether we should dig a tunnel or make the road wider like in Khandala Ghat section between Pune & Mumbai

Soon we will hear good news on this.

Last week Central Govt approved 1670 KM length National Highway for Karnataka.

The longest state highway between Bidar and Srirangapatna(mysore) will now become NH.

    Bangalore-Mysore-madikeri-Sullia-Bhantwal will become 370 KM new NH-275.

Udupi-Theerthahalli 80 KM stretch will be part of National highways.

In addition there are two more NHs in uttara karnataka..

    Thanks to Gadkariji...
