Mangalore: Chandrahas Devadiga of 'ten rupee a meal' fame no more

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Jun 20: Chandras Devadiga (58), who used to operate a hotel from Padavinangady in the city, and who was widely known and reverred for providing homely meals for a paltry sum of ten rupees, breathed his last at his residence at Bolpugudde in Padavinangady on Thursday June 19 due to cardiac arrest. He has left behind wife, a son, and a daughter.

Devadiga, who hailed from Yedapadavu in the district, was running his hotel business near Goddess Mahalasa Narayani Temple, Padavinangady, since the last about four decades. He stoutly believed that hotel business is not about making money but to feed the needy at affordable cost. Besides providing lunch at ten rupees, he also supplied snacks, tea, coffee etc at reasonable rates, which were considerably cheaper as compared to other hotels.

Chandrahas Devadiga had gone to bed after his hotel was closed for the day at around 9.30 pm on Wednesday June 19. He did not wake up on Thursday morning as usual, as he had suffered cardiac arrest in his sleep.

Devadiga had been felicitated by various organizations and institutions for his social service for the benefit of common man.

He was a staunch activist of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, and used to conduct Raksha Bandhan, Guru Vandane, Baithak etc at his residence. Scores of people including those who benefitted from his gesture of providing food at reasonable cost, and those who were touched by his social service initiatives, have mourned his untimely death. A steady stream of Devadiga's well-wishers visited his home to pay their last respects to the departed soul.

In this ere, people look for maximum profit out of everything, including relationship, religion, position,..etc, & it is commendable to know some one who is running his livelihood by feeding needy people at minimum cost.
We should also appreciate the support from his family for not pressurizing him with demands which would have forced him to change his simplicity & philosophy. May Chadras family get more blessings for his good deeds..

His work of Serving Poor people is highly appreciated. Perhaps, State governments when awarding Rajyothsava Prashasti should consider such people who serve society.
Really it is unbelievable. Similarly I have seen a person whom students call 'Samoosa Ajje' in St Aloysius Campus, who over 40 years provide Samoosa to students at very subsidized price.
Heartfull condolence to this person & to his noble work. RIP....

See how the good deeds pay off. What a lucky man he was !! In his sleep he died. Not even his family members know during his death. Very lucky God paid for his good deeds.

People suffer so much in life with sickness. More we run behind money the more we are bound to fall sick (I mean to say inviting sickness like BP, Sugar etc...).

May his soul rest in peace.

Some are born to ruin the society and some are born to serve the society without expecting anything in return. When we do good deeds rest of the things like name, fame will fall on your path automatically. No need to spend money to earn name and fame, which is temporary.Yes, some people are definitely spending money for it.

But Chandrahasa Devadiga was not among the lot.He was born to serve the society. That is why even after his sudden demise, people are remembering him. Why? only because of his good deeds, did when he was alive.Loosing such a people means great loss not only to his family members but also to the entire society as well.I am extending my heartfelt condolence to the bereaved family members and pray Almighty God to bestow them enough strength, energy, tolerance and patience to bear this irreparable loss.I Pray Almighty God to grant eternal peace to the departed soul.RIP

    a mere 10 rupees a meal!
