Udupi, Jun 19: After holding several rounds of discussions, and in consultation with the authorities of neighbouring districts, the regional transport authority(RTA) of the district has permitted an increase in bus fares. The revised fares, applicable for city, shuttle, and express buses alike, have been made effective from June 18.
The bus owners had been demanding for permitting a hike in bus fares in view of increased financial burden on account of rise in diesel prices, staff salaries, spare parts, maintenance, etc.
The decision was announced after holding meeting with Canara Bus Operators Association, Udupi City Bus Owners Association and others. The RTA has decided to permit increase in the minimum fare from six to seven rupees. The hike now permitted ranges from 15 to 20 percent.
In a release, Muddu Mohan, deputy commissioner of the district, who also happens to be the head of the regional transport authority, has directed all the bus owners to pass on strict instructions to their staff to collect revised fares only as per the chart drawn for the same. He has warned that strict measures will be taken against those who are found to be violating this instruction.
