Mangalore, Jun 19: Unknown miscreants took away four milk yielding cows from a cattle shed in Kuppepadavu within the jurisdiction of Bajpe police station here on Wednesday June 18 morning. Protesting against the police apathy relating to this and other incidents of theft of cows, villagers held a protest on the road and burnt tyres on Wednesday. The protest was withdrawn after assistant commissioner of police (ACP), Ravikumar, interacted with the protesters.

Early morning on Wednesday, a gang of thieves was seen loading four cows belonging to a local advocate, Bhaskar Kattemar, onto a vehicle. A family member named Puneet Kumar, who woke to some strange sounds, saw what was happening. Before Kumar could act, the miscreants fled in the Tata Sumo vehicle used for this act, along with the stolen animals.

It is said that Puneet Kumar had immediately called up Moodbidri police over phone, and told them that a vehicle loaded with stolen cows was moving in their direction, and had asked them to  intercept this vehicle. Although he called the police station repeatedly thereafter,  it is said that the police personnel did not positively respond to this request. Angered by this, locals blocked the road and burnt tyres to register their protest, before they were  pacified by the ACP.

In the presence of ACP, the locals complained about the inertia on the part of  policemen attached to Bajpe and Moodbidri stations. When   Ravikumar took them to task, the policemen tried to give lame excuses for their inaction. The ACP promised to nab the thieves of cows at the earliest. A case was registered in Bajpe police station in this respect.

The thieves can usually fit about 10 cows on a truck, and each fetches 5,000 rupees — about $94. In a country where more than 800 million people live on less than $2 a day, a single night’s haul of more than $900 represents serious temptation.

One man who has helped the police in neighboring Uttar Pradesh said the rustlers were often able to bribe their way to freedom. “Even if they’re sent to jail, they come out in 10 to 15 days and commit the same crimes again,” said the man, who did not want his name used for fear of reprisals

Disgusting n highly condemnable act. Stealing cattles must be stopped n all civilized citizens irrespective of their faith must stand united in fighting this menance. Culprits must be caught n their hands must be chopped off. All illegal beef slaughter houses must be closed down n police inaction n nexus of police with criminals must be exposed. People should take an oath not to eat from illegal vendors of beef. All illegal vendors are stealing cattle. Govt should establish licensed legal beef shops n there shd be a system n mechanism in the trading of redundant cattles....muslims are forbidden from eating from stolen cattle n they should know the source of their merchandise or else they are also equal partners in this trade.. islam prohibits from eating from stolen n sick animals....I feel these thieves should bevshot n killed n eliminated so that the rest of community members live in peace n love with their hindu brethren....
