Mangalore, Jun 11: A person who was trying to deceive people by posing as an official of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was handed over to the police by locals.
The imposter was later identified as Muhammed Shariff, residing near Vamanjoor.
A couple of days back, it is gathered, a team of four approached Ansar from Jerinagar near Bajpe, claiming to be deputed by CBI to investigate a case against him. They also flashed fake identity cards purported to be issued by CBI. When Ansar told them that he would approach the police, the visitors claimed that they had been sent by the police for arresting him.
When Ansar did not budge, the team threatened him with hoisting of false cases against him, apart from throwing acid on him and injecting him with AIDS virus. After Ansar tried to strike a deal with the gang, the members agreed to exonerate him subject to payment of Rs 50,000. Ansar promised to make a payment of Rs 25,000 to the gang on Tuesday, and the balance after a couple of days later.
Some locals who saw the gang approaching Ansar's home on Tuesday tried to catch hold of the gang members. While three succeeded in running away, Shariff was caught and beaten up. Shariff reportedly confessed that his accomplices were Salam, Sharma, and Hameed.
Shariff stands admitted into Wenlock Hospital here for treatment of his injuries. A case was registered in Bajpe police station. Investigation is on. The police are making efforts to locate and take into custody other members of his gang.
