Bangalore: Margaret Alva opposes power projects in coastal region

Bangalore, Jun 5: Rajasthan Governor Margaret Alva has opposed implementation of power projects in the coastal region, which is bio-rich Western Ghats.

Alva opposed sanctioning of power projects to coastal districts, including her native Uttara Kannada.

The Uttara Kannada has already has atomic energy and several hydro power projects.

Sanctioning of more power projects only in one district would damage the flora and fauna of that district, she said.

Speaking after the inauguration of a Green Summit at the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry here, Alva said generating energy from alternative sources would control damage to the environment and enable the states to remain self-sufficient in power generation.

She said a majority of States in the country have been facing electricity shortage and governments need to give focus on generating alternative sources of energy such as wind, solar, biogas.

She appealed to states to rope in private sector for harnessing solar energy.

Rajasthan government has given emphasis on setting up grid-connected rooftop solar power plants.

The Governor said she would retire from the Raj Bhavan in the next three months and would settle down in Bangalore.

Karnataka was the first state in the country to implement the Solar Policy to ensure self-sufficiency in the energy sector.

The State Cabinet recently approved a revised solar energy policy – 2014-21.

Smt Margaret Alva has no local political standing. As far as Karnataka is concerned, she is spent force. Why does she not gracefully accept retirement & take political sanyas?? we all know what happened to those who abruptly resigned as Governers & tried their luck in local politics.....nowhere to be seen!!

what political standing does Naleen Kumar Kateel have ? He won ( like many others ) only because of the Modi wave and not because of his achievements. What did he do for Mangalore constituency in the last 5 years ? Did he even open his mouth once in the last Lok Sabha ?South Kanara boasts about high percentage of literacy. But when it comes to elections the ' so called 'literate become illiterate.

Messers Sh Rajesh Kumar & Sh Shridhar Kini, very evident you guys are living in isolation & far from reality. Sh Kateel was adjudged the 41st best MP in 15th LS for MPLAD funds distribution. But being living in Mangaluru, its too difficult to fathom that u dont know or realize truth. But yes, good that you accept that there was a Modi wave. You need some hand holding in Karnataka politics looks like...Read DW more :-)

Mr.Prabhu, as a member of the KCCI ( Kanara Chamber ), we know how much Mrs Margaret Alva has done for South Kanara incl.Udupi besides Karnataka State. Please ask some of the ex office bearers of the KCCI and then post your comments. I am ashamed to read your post without knowing many facts. P.N: A lot of things are done without media coverage.

I totally agree with Mr.Padmanabha Shenoy. As a Member of the KCCI, I know the amount Mrs Alva has helped Coastal Karnataka just with a couple of phone calls. She holds a very high position even with the leaders of other political parties. She is a very simple and helpful human being. Lets be proud of her.

It is a fundamental habit of the politicians not to live the politics in their life time. Now see her tenure of governor get over within three months and may not get extension because of the change of government at centre. For getting new employment these kind of people (politicians) always take some issues and come to limelight. If she really taking the issue of power project not to taken at d k because of environmental destruction let her suggest other neighboring district of the state who can supply power to d k. but anyhow i wish her peaceful retired life.

Excellent approach. It is time that the people of Mangalore realize that for nine months in the year SOLAR POWER can be harnessed and in some cases even stored.

People all over India need flora and fauna - nature's gifts to mankind. These should be protected, preserved and nurtured instead of destroying them.

There is one more alternative and that is making use of winds to generate power as is being done in several parts of the world. Wind turbines are indeed an alternative. Hope the Government gives a serious thought to these ideas which will also help people to live in pollution free areas.

    Multiply nature....
green belts ..forest land ..all should multiply..
while working on natural resource scientific conservation learn from the Germans , Israelis and Japan.
Give these projects to young India in schools..colleges ..engineering colleges ..fisheries and agricultural universities...
we need answers and solutions not just problems ..
work on alternative sand implement since we should live to see in our life time as none of the politicians are literate or educated to understand so,its time the qualified ..educated professionals should come forward in advising the govt like dr. CNR RAO.Dr. KALAM..Dr. SAM PITRODA..
    and implement projects immediately...
Give me your roof and i will give you ELECTRICITY should be the slogan.
also fishing boats should be fitted with solar power...
so we need solutions ..answers..not only problems..

Let our great Ministers stay like a common man in South Kanara and experience the power cuts which the common man is facing day in and day out any time or all the time, either for servicing which is unheard of in other places, or some line problem, or no power for hours no reason.

Industries cannot run full time although staff have to be paid for full time. Always problem with power cuts. In fact the staff have to be paid extra for work done when power is restored late evening.

Ladies cannot walk in the dark as there is no power on the streets, so dark and frightening. and still we have great suggestions not to have power projects.

See Gujarat, Mumbai and other places, there is no thing like 'power cut' and the place is in full swing be it industry or the people.

Cogentrix they pushed out years back and now every one is suffering.

Please think about the common man in this great district and we need power projects to give us power due to us. we do not want power free. we will pay for it. but please, we need a life without power cuts. our simple basic need.
    thanks.

Ma'am, while coastal souls are baking in sultry summer (as against your 24x7 air conditioned comforts), your 'terminal suggestions' are not too welcome. Learn the appropriate solution for the problem from the coastal state of Gujarath instead of central desert of India.
