Bangalore: Beware! Luxury tax on extravagant weddings on the anvil

From Our Special Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore

Bangalore, May 29: Beware! If your wedding budget exceeds Rs 5 lakh and the attendance of guests and invitees crosses 1,000, the Siddaramaiah regime is planning to add luxury tax burden on such weddings.

This is a move presently under contemplation of the Congress government in Karnataka.

''Our intention is to curb wasteful expenditure and check extravagant weddings,” said Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T B Jayachandra.

Speaking to reporters in Bangalore on Thursday, the minister said the State Government is contemplating levy of a new luxury tax on a slab basis on weddings, in which the expenses exceeded Rs 5 lakh and attendance of guests and invitees crossed the 1000 mark.

The amount collected in the form of tax would be pooled into the Marriage Fund to fund marriages in poor families or holding mass marriages, he said.

The Minister said registration of marriages would also be made mandatory.

The rich, affluent and even middle class families in cities have been lavishly spending on marriages of their sons and daughters.

To exhibit their wealth, the families invite thousands of people to the marriage and hold function in expensive air-conditioned halls, he said.

''I recently received a marriage invitation costing more than Rs 7,000,” he said.

''If these people can afford to spend so much money, then they should be prepared to shell out money for helping the poorer sections at least to arrange a modest and decent wedding of their wards.

In the background of a recent debate in the legislative assembly and encourage holding simple and inter-caste marriages, the State Government was planning to collect luxury tax from families conduct marriages spending more than Rs 5 lakh and on those inviting more than 1000 people for the function.

Slabs for different rate of taxes would be decided after discussion of the proposed Bill in the State legislature, he said.

The Karnataka Marriages (Regulation and Miscellaneous Provisions Act), 1976, would be amended to levy luxury tax on marriages.

Marriage tax officers would be appointed to monitor luxury marriage and collect taxes from parties and persons celebrating such marriage, he said.

Their Intention of taxes on Luxus wedding is but quite wrong. They should intend to collect taxes on the right persons.wedding itself is a costly affair because everything has become costlier than previously.Alone caterers costing per plate how much?M.c:AT LEAST 10thousand,music,deco,flowers,guests Transport and and about clothes and Gold Need not to talk.where to save?so they can collect tax from These mc,s caterers jewelers.and some Ministers weddings or industrials who give out handful Gold to every guest and bring guests in helis, they can give enough taxes.A poor mans wedding itself cost is by Girls parents have to bear.

    CRAZY THOUGHT BY THE GOVERNMENT

    it cannot be implemented.

the thought of spending within limits should be advised by family members and should be encouraged by one and all in the family.

getting a law for this is madness
there are so many expenses for a wedding. what will the government keep an eye on?
    1) sarees- at saree shops?
    2) food? - an eye on the caterers?
    3) hall? - an eye on all establishments?
... the list goes on and on....
the hall rent for a marriage at t.m.a. pai hall mangalore, will run in to lakhs itself...
what are these government people talking about?

As told to me by a pakistani work colleauge, when i was employed in the gulf:

In pakistan, it is illegal to even have a lavish spread of food on your wedding day. So, only biryani as a single dish can be served, or naan and a single non-veg dish only. Only one single non-veg item. Actually, their logic makes sense in this regard, because meat prices go much higher during wedding season and the common man cannot afford to buy meat for his family. So that is why there is banquet ban, on serving multiple non-veg dishes during wedding.
I think in India too, we should think something of like that, because of the humongous food waste that happens in our weddings.

I may not be that financial savvy. But I would think that if someone spends money then aren't they contributing to the economy. If a crore is spent on a wedding for instance, then isn't this going to the gold store, saree store, catering, flower businesses. By holding it back isn't it curbing the economy ???. Why don't the govt insist that the source of that money is disclosed and all business is done with receipt and appropriate taxes ??. Somebody here please educate me.

Putting a limitation on the number of people invited is quite illogical.

But, taxing the extravagant burning of money is a must and the taxed amount must be spent exclusively for the poor sections of the society for their marriage expenditure. If five thousand people are invited for a marriage and some sweets are given as the reception dinner, they should not be taxed.

Curbing wasteful expenditure is o.k. when we see so many poor people die without food.

But the problem is too many taxes and regulators.
Scope for bribe and corruptions will increase once a tax is levied, then it is never rolled back, even if their intentions are fulfilled.
What Govt. is going to do for people building palatial houses?
Are they going to tax them as well?

Other hand by giving Rice for Rs.1/- kg to poor people, Govt is encouraging them to be lazy.
They will not work, and if they earn, they will spend them on liquor or drugs.
Poor economic policies and lack of long term vision!

Why Luxury Tax only on Weddings. Of course there is wasteful spending in weddings - right from Gold, to clothes, to music and food. All should be taxed heavily. Why tax only weddings - The Government should also implement luxury tax on High End Cars, bikes, High End Electronic Gadgets like Cell, TVs etc., Branded Shoes, Watches etc as they definitely come under Luxury. Also people spend huge amount on purchasing land, houses, furnitures, interior decorations ets - they are also part of luxury - tax them heavily. I am also sure that people use Sandalwood to cremate the dead and also expensive death tombs are built so that the dead enjoys luxury after life, which should be taxed.

I feel that the Government should also not leave underwear as they form part of luxury. Even foreign liquor and cigarettes should have luxury tax as the person who uses considers it a prestige issues. So right from Shoes to Underwear till the head that we use should be luxury and taxed. We will more of these in the coming years gradually when we start Luxury TAx on Weddings.

I find this the most ridiculous of all taxes. Taxes for getting married?????

Marriage is the most special day in anyones life. Display of wealth is a personal choice. So why has the government want to tax a wedding. If the government is so concerned about the poor let it find its own fundng sources and not burden people with additional taxes. I belive this should be more of a donation from the rich or a personal choice vs. somebody enforcing a rule an make it mandatory.

By the way an average Indian family will have at least 50 to 100 close relatives so now do we ask them to come with a 10% or 20% cheque. The rich dont mind spending but it is always the middle income society that is put to hardship.

With such measures the government is just showing the level of financial mess it is in as always with any congress government.

You want to mop up revenue first clean up your house and you will find cash stashed in places in your house that you might have forgotten even existed.

Dont transfer your incapacity and incapability to a simple tax payer!!!!!!

    This is absolute crap.
    1. How will they find out how much the wedding costs, when almost all transactions are cash based?
2.India's population is more than a billion. Of course I will have more than thousand family members.
    3. Wasteful expenditure you say? And yet they travel in convoys of 40-50 cars, go on foreign junkets, and have other wasteful perks as MLAs and ministers.
4.If the rich, affluent and even middle class families in cities have been lavishly spending on marriages of their sons and daughters, it is their right to do so. Who is the government to question? Are they funding it?
    5. A lot of marriage halls are air conditioned these days. Even ministers offices are air conditioned.
    6. Appointing marriage tax officers will add to the harassment and corruption.

This government needs to focus on other important issues rather than frivolous ones. The recent election results should have been an eye opener to them and they seem deaf, dumb and blind to it.

    Absolutely rubbish.......

But the limit of 5 lakh is too low cut off because with the expense nowadays even middle class people also are forced to spend that much or bit more that because of the social and status pressure weather they can afford it or not is different question or how do they manage it. Just photography coats not less than 50k. Halls charge from 20k to 200k depending on class and place. I have known some ridicules menu charges like 5000 per plate which is really a waste of money. Such extravagant expenditure s should be. Taxed as such parties can afford to pay such tax without any pinch to their pockets. I suggest the cut off should be 10 lakhs but the tax would be heavy on such expenditure s

Wah CONGiss Wah… started showing your true colour now. Moreover the money collected through such tax would be utilized to conduct simple marriages including mass and inter-caste marriages? Why don’t you say that you support conversion sponsored by Government itself!!! It’s true that “Abki Baar Antim Sanskar" for CONGiss in Karnataka for sure. Just try to implement the rule and you see the repercussion

Citizens are masters in evading tax ( Property value, Income Tax etc) and Who will show their actual wedding cost...???? Now trend will start that Caterers also take black money and Bride will not display her Gold in Wedding Hall or they will this artificial/Imitated ornaments..........

Wow this is a good move. When people cant control themselves then someone has to control it. Impose higher taxes so we will conduct more simpler marriages.

In Islam marriage are meant to be in as much simple as possible. But nowadays people don't care and understand that saving money and helping a poor is much worth.
