Beltangady, Jul 5: In an inhuman act, a senior citizen was strangled to death and then was thrown into a well over a property dispute on Monday July 3 night. The murder came to light only on Tuesday July 4 morning after the body was taken out of the well by the police.
Lakshmi (72) was living in her grand-daughter Yashodha's house near Aladangady gram panchayat office. Yashodha who had been married to one Sathish Shetty alias Button Shetty has 3 children.
Sathish is a habitual drinker. He used to hit his wife and children regularly while being under the influence of alcohol. Having found it difficult to withstand his harassment, Yashodha had gone to one of her relatives' house only three days ago. So only Sahthis and aged Lakshmi were in the house.
Yashodha and Lakshmi owned some property. Sathish had been forcing them to make the property in his name. On Monday night when only Lakshmi was in the house, Sathish once again started forcing her regarding the property. But she refused to transfer her piece of land in his name.
Enraged by her resistance, Sathish strangled her to death with the help of a wire and once she was dead, threw her into a nearby well. On Tuesday morning he spread the news that Lakshmi had committed suicide by jumping into the well.
Once police arrived, they removed the body from the well. They found a wire around her neck which clearly indicated that she had been murdered. So they arrested Sathish. During the enquiry he confessed that he had killed Lakshmi on Monday night.
Beltangady police are investigating the case.
