Inauguration of National Service Scheme

National Service Scheme (NSS) of School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangalore was inaugurated in the college auditorium. HoD of Kannada Department Dr P N Maiya inaugurated the NSS unit and asked the students to utilize the talents hidden in them and also spoke about the excellent opportunities that are available to the students. Through these opportunities the students can participate in the inter-collegiate programmes and expose their talents, he said.
 
Principal Dr Jacinta D’Souza encouraged the students to join the NSS camp and learn values of co-operation and team spirit. NSS officer and Kannada professor Poornima Lokesh, in her welcome speech, said that NSS would help the students know each other and to lead a disciplined life.

President of Inner Wheel club of Mangalore Poornima Rao exhorted the students to work as a unit and assured that her team would co-operate with the NSS programmes in future.

Vinaya Kumari of II BA and Savitri of II BSW compered the programme. Raju of II BSW proposed the vote of thanks.

Inauguration of Kannada Sangha

Renowned scholar and researcher Dr Srinivas Havanoor inaugurated the Kannada Sangha of the School of Social Work by lighting the lamp.

Dr Havanoor, in his speech, said that in a pluralistic society like India there was no harm in learning English and everyone should learn it well too, along with Kannada. He felt that proficiency in English as well as Kannada was highly needed for students.

Principal Dr Jacinta D’Souza presided over the function. She said that it was very important to be in touch with one's own roots whatever the place. HoD Kannada Department Dr P N Maiya introduced Dr Havanoor and Prof Poornima Lokesh proposed the vote of thanks.

Umadevi N, Final year student, compered the function, which concluded with a mime show on the theme ‘Peace’ by ‘Neenasam’ KTC students.

GRID orientation programme for freshers 2006-07

A participatory and interactive Orientation Programme was held for the fresh batch of BA and BSW students of School of Social Work.

The batch consisting of 110 students had sessions on self-awareness, self-discovery, interpersonal relationship, teamwork, creative potential and experience-sharing. The methodology included relationship, teamwork, games, simulations and other experiential learning activities.

The workshop was designed and executed by a team from Group for Institution Development (GRID), a training and consultancy agency. Prof Joselyn Lobo, Faculty of Roshni Nilaya and also Secretary of GRID was the chief facilitator.

Manisha Vasanth and Melita D’Souza of GRID and Ratna Pinto, a psychologist, were the other facilitators. Sharon Braggs and Sherwin D’Souza immediate past students also assisted in the workshop as volunteers.
