Bangalore, Jul 3: The Corps of Detective (CoD) sleuths, investigating the data theft case involving an employee of the multinational HSBC Data Processing India Ltd (HDPI), today put the accused through a polygraph test.
CoD had arrested Nadeem Kashmiri, an employee of HDPI, on June 28 from a city locality following a complaint by his employer that he had stolen personal data of UK-based account holders of its parent organisation HSBC and passed it on to a Briton, who had siphoned off 2.33 lakh pounds by fraudulent transactions through ATM, debit cards and phone banking services.
Speaking to UNI, Deputy Inspector General of CoD (Economic Offences) Sanjay Vir Singh said the accused was subjected to a polygraph test at the city-based Forensic Science Laboratory and experts would submit a report in two days.
''Though we have gathered some information in this case, something is still left out. We will put Nadeem through Narco analysis test in the next two days. Hence, we will be seeking extension of his police custody for a few more days,'' the DIG said.
Nadeem was remanded to police custody by a city court for seven days, which would end tomorrow.
Police investigation revealed that the accused had passed on the information to one Ershad, a third generaion Indian living in the UK, after he was lured into the fraud by the latter by promising him a job in the European nation and cash in return for confidential data.
Investigators were trying to ascertain whether Ershad was associated with some mafia or terrorist group and whether more people were involved in the cyber crime.
The fraud came to light after some account holders in Britain had complained to HSBC that money in their accounts had been debited without their knowledge. Following this, HDPI had conducted its own internal inquiry and after zeroing in on Nadeem, they had filed a complaint with the cyber crime police station.
