Udupi, May 16: The BJP organized a meeting in the aftermath of the party’s stupendous victory on Friday May 16 at Chittaranjan Circle, here.
Victorious Shobha Karandlaje, addressing the gathering, said that it is a historical day in her life. “It is an end to the UPA’s corrupt administration. The public has given the right answer to the UPA government by electing the BJP with a good majority. It symbolizes patriotism, which is one of the reasons behind our win,” she said.
Karandlaje further said, “People elected this party to ensure implementation of the Gujarat model in Karnataka. I will abide by the party and not betray the faith reposed in me.” She cited the example of Nitish Kumar, Bihar chief minister, and his attitude before the election and said that the people had taught him a good lesson.
“BJP got a clear majority of votes which shows that people’s mentality indicates the need for a capable leader in the state. I will meet all demands and be the voice of the people while being obedient to the Modi government,” said Karandlaje.
Raghupathi Bhat, former MLA, Lalaji Mendon, Jeevraj, MLA Chikmagalur, Mattar Ratnakar Hegde, Sheela Shetty, Yashpal Suvarna, and all Mahila Morcha members were present.

Udupi, May 16: The BJP, which briefly lost control over Udupi-Chikmagalur constituency about two years back during the by-election necessitated by the resignation of the then MP, D V Sadananda Gowda, has wrested the seat back. Its candidate, Shobha Karandlaje, has defeated Congress candidate, Jayaprakash Hegde, by an impressive margin of nearly one lac votes.
Speaking to reporters, a beaming Shobha thanked people and party workers for her making her win and said, "This is not my victory but the victory of people and party workers who worked hard. I have been in this constituency for only a month, but seeing the work I did in just one month, the people have chosen me. I assure to bring a lot of development to my constituency."
Shobha, former state minister and leader of KJP which merged with the BJP just before the election, brought a tremendous victory for the BJP. In the last election, it's candidate, Sunil Kumar, had lost to Jayaprakash Hegde. The fact that independent MLA, Halady Srinivas Shetty from Kundapur, who had remained neutral last time because of the humiliation he had faced from BJP leaders, had allowed his supporters to go with the BJP seems to have tilted scales in favour of the saffron party.
Jayaprakash Hegde, who arrived at the counting centre in the morning, left early after sensing that he was in for a thorough drubbing. Karandlaje, being a woman candidate hailing from Karnataka, it is thought, may get a berth in the union ministry.
