Sindhagi: CM Siddaramaiah attends 'child marriage'

Sindhagi (Bijapur), May 14 (DHNS): Chief Minister Siddaramaiah seems to have courted controversy by attending a mass marriage ceremony at Balaganura village in the taluk on Tuesday.

Some of those who tied the knot in the programme were below the legal age for marriage.

Siddaramaiah took part in a programme organised by the Kencharaya temple committee, in which 42 couples entered into wedlock. Of these, 16 girls were later found to be children.

Following a complaint, Vasudeva Tolabandi, president of the district child welfare committee, and Sunanda of the district children’s helpline rushed to the spot. Based on their complaint, Ramesh Rathod, senior dentist of the government hospital in the town, examined the teeth of the couple.

Following the test, it was confirmed that the 16 brides were underage.

Sindhu Badigera, the incharge child development project officer of the women and child development department, said that they had no information about the child marriage.

She said her office had received on May 9 a list of 51 names for clearance for the mass marriage programme. Of these, the names of seven girls had been rejected as they were underage, Badigera said.

So it cultural problem and nothing else ? Japanese and Koreans are hardworking and Indians are not ? Strange that there are so many Indians outside India who do so well. It is obvious you have gaps in understanding economics. The purchase power parity takes into account the cost of living difference and the living standards. Now once you've understood PPP, go ahead and look where India stands at per capita GDP PPP. We are below banana republics like Colombia, Guatemala and our own neighbors like SriLanka and Bhutan.

Now look at where we stand when it comes to quality of life. Look at the HDI/Human development index. We rank among the very bottom of the list.

The road widening is like putting the cart before the horse. You mention Singapore, have you ever seen the Singaporean government destroys homes and businesses to widen the roads ? No. Because there is something called as city planning which takes into account population and commercial expansion for the next 30-40 years and makes provisions for it. What stopped the Indian government from doing the same ? Didn't NHAI see how the vehicular traffic was increasing, how the population was increasing ? Why didn't they do this decade ago when the land was abundant.

None of this is due to the people, but the government whom we entrust the responsibility of leading the country. And if the government is busy in corruption, political apathy, and vote bank politics, the country will end up the way India has.

Siddu should have inspected teeth of every bride before attending the program. Great mistake. Come on guys what the temple committee was doing? Without age proof how do they organized this mass marriage event.

Dear Matthew, Nitte, the total size of Singapore, S.Korea & Japan is less than that of Karnataka alone. The total population is also less. The culture is different. S.Koreans & Japanese are hard working race whereas Singapore has strict rules & follows meritocracy.
FYI we are now the 3rd largest economy surpassing Japan.
Now coming to dollars & cents, sorry, rupees & paise.
    1. 2 plain parrathas with curry in a food court in Singapore costs 240 INR.
    2. 1 plate seafood fried rice in Timore Lesthe costs 900 INR.
    3. 6 packets,each of 200gm of noodles & 6 bottles of 500ml. water costs 1800 INR. in Australia.
    4. 1 km. of bus ride costs 60 INR. in Singapore.
    5. 1 tin of coke costs 50 INR. in Indonesia.
    6. 1 burger costs 300 INR. in S.Korea.
    7. 1 plate chicken fried rice costs 180 INR. in Thailand.
    8. 1 cheese sandwich 1 coffee costs 210 INR. in Brazil.
    9. 1 burger 1 soft drink costs 700 INR. in Panama.
    10. Spitting anywhere in the open air costs 25000 INR. in Singapore.
Please note the rates mentioned above, from 1 - 9 are of street side restaurants & food courts.

    Now coming to Nitte itself,
    1. A patch of road nr. Parapadi is'nt widened because of the objection of one residential house. The same road nr. cashew industry Manjarapalke isn't completely widened & left with a hazard nr. a house.
    2. The roads in the towns of Karkala, Moodabidri & Mundkur are not allowed to widen by the locals.
    3. The NHAI scrapped the project of widening NH across Kerala just because there were a lot of objections against land acquisition.
When the citizens themselves are not allowing development then there's no point in blaming the government, be it headed by any political party or coalition.

He was a guest at the function of mass marriage programme. The organizers are responsible for the verification of age of the couples. Siddanna is progressive minded man. that is why the people of Karnataka accepted him as CM . During the period of the previous government of yedurappa ji how so called religion guards beaten the college girls in manglore and stoned prayer halls of other minority religions. Such things are not happening now at least.

CM attending a child marriage is wrong but what the child marriage taking place all over India specially in the north. The police and the administration are the mute spectators even when they are taking place very much under their nose.
There are so many things taking place openly in the name of culture and religion against the law that need to be changed.

If you construct a wall while building a home, it is not called "architectural marvel", but a basic necessity to build a structure.

The little "achievements" you quote represents the basic aspirations of any nation and not achievement. Singapore gained independence 50 years ago, South Korea 65 yrs ago and Japan was reduced to ashes during WW2. Where are those countries and where are we ? If you think per capita income of <$2000/yr, and over 700 million living on less than $2 a day is "achievement", then god help us !

R.Fernandis, Rajesh Shetty, First of all you don't see any difference between 60 years back and now? Come on guys talk the reality. don't say something blunder just to criticize the congress. Disappearing Congress for 15 years! not at all possible. People were saying same thing when Mr.Vajapayee became PM. But he dissolved the parliament 6 months earlier than the period as he was not able to control. But after Modi becoming PM forget about the development. Now India is heading towards the bloodbath within the country and wars with neighboring countries. Because he wants to show his 56" chest to everybody. Finally, there will be a disaster only! God save India.

Secondly whether any age proof of the participants is enclosed to the invitation.

Hahaha in 60 years they could not do anything. Abdul rafiq is talking about another 4 years. What a joke. In 1947 Nehru said hum garibi hataenge. In 1960s indira repeated the same. In 90 s Rajiv gandhi repeated the same. In 2004,2009 pappu and Sonia chanted the same mantra. We ate tired of hearing this. Only during election they rwad these lines and vote bank politics and these guys go gaga about it.
