According to Raigad police control room, 17 passengers were killed and around 120 injured in the mishap which occurred in a remote area. However, a Railway spokesman in New Delhi put the number of those killed at 13.

The death toll rose as more bodies and injured persons were found trapped when the overturned bogies were being removed, a police official said.

Of the injured passengers, a majority were being treated at Roha government hospital and the rest at Nagothane primary health centre, it said.

Following the mishap, services on Konkan Railway route were suspended. According to railway authorities, some trains were diverted via Panvel-Lonavala-Pune-Miraj-Londa-Madgaon and a few cancelled.

A goods train had derailed last month on the route, affecting services.  The Railways ordered an inquiry and Railway Minister Mallikarjun Kharge announced an ex-gratia of Rs two lakh for the next of the kin those killed in the accident, Rs 50,000 for the grievously hurt and Rs 10,000 for passengers who suffered minor injuries.

Those passengers who have a valid train ticket for the cancelled/ diverted/short terminated trains, can travel by these buses towards Mumbai. Passengers are not required to pay anything for the bus journey, railway authorities said.

Konkan railway is reeling under heavy loan pressure and unable to clear even now since 15 years. The maintenance cost is very high and safety a big problem due to the lose soil between Ratnagiri and Roha. Railway minister must do something urgent so that the burden of maintenance cost is relieved, bring major stations Mangalore and Panvel under KR so that revenue which is very less than maintenance should increase. KR must be very alert the coming months to prevent any more disaster with hourly track inspection, netting, retention walls etc, as the monsoon is fast approaching!

In recent years there have been a spate of rail accidents in India. The Konkan Railway has seen frequent mishaps from the beginning of its operations. The Indian railways has been facing the apathy of the authorities, with inadequate maintenance and insufficient security measures, despite the fact the country has one of the largest railway networks in the world. Probes initiated into accidents mostly fizzle out and often mishaps are attributed to technical snags. It would be a good idea to offer travel insurance to rail passengers on the lines of airlines.

My condolences to the family of those killed and injured in this tragic accident.
Over the past several years the govt have been announcing several new trains due to the ever increasing demand, but the production of coaches /compartments has not kept up with the demand. So the same old rakes are being used for a longer period, obviously affecting safety I am not sure of the cause here but there is absolutely no doubt that safety has taken a back seat in both rail and toad traffic. In western countries, even if an accident occurs at 120 miles per hours there are hardly any fatalities in most of the cases as the coaches have more safety features in respect of design ,material used etc.It is high time Indian govt did something about improving Safety on trains . IR is one mode of transport that binds our country together and let us not lose faith in our railways.

An accident can occur anytime but its the attitude of people that's really shocking . The incident is not even headlines in all major news channels. All are covering political news for better TRP's. Authorities are getting thick skinned and railway mishap is become very common.

Detailed study and safety overhaul of konkan route should be made part of the system . There should be panel for investigation , and railway authorities should be brought under criminal liability. And 2 lacs for victim's family is a Joke , it should be at least equal to that person's life time earnings , with the proper grievance system.

Konkan railways is facing problems every year & these kind of accidents happen & innocent citizens killed. Does this have something to do with the soil & topography in the Konkan / Goa coastline? Is it the reason why the tracks get disturbed? Or was it any seismic activity? High time the Konkan railway authorities probe & find out

It's such a shame that we announce 1 lakh rupees as payment for dead for the fault of the government for poor safety standards.. wheres as a person who runs away from the law and is shot in Karnataka he gets 25 lac payment. Increase the compensation for the victims irrespective of religion to minimum 10 lacs per head.In todays world, even one lakh is a very nominal amount for all purposes.

Dear Doctor, yes the compensation of one lakh is peanuts.it should be reasonably increased and as per the railways act the compensation for the killed is 5 laks.We should fight for that.

Dear Doctor, from where did you get this figure of 25 laks, Hope it is not found in your medical books. Are you giving the prescription to your patients as per medical books OR as per rumors.

Doctor saab, commenting on this forum like this is not expected from your STATUS. There are many readers who have BLINDLY agreed with his LIE comments.
