Mangalore: Niddodi power project - More skeletons tumble out of govt's cupboard

Mangalore, Apr 30: Information relating to the proposed ultra mega thermal power plant at Niddodi is coming out after efforts were made to get these details through Right to Information Act. It has come to light that in an important meeting held last year, it was planned to conduct pollution audit of Udupi Power Corporation Ltd, so that this report could be used to support setting up of power plant at Niddodi.

At a meeting held at the auditorium of Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd at Bangalore on May 17 last year, it was decided to audit the level of pollution created by UPCL plant with the specific aim of addressing the doubts and apprehensions arising in the minds of the people. This meeting was attended, among others, by officials of Central Electricity Authority and Power Finance Corporation, who had visited Niddodi to undertake inspection, chief secretary in the department of energy, and other officials.

It is said that the government had specifically planned to get a pollution audit, with details of air and water pollution caused by UPCL project, through Indian Institute of Technology or Indian Institute of Science, for satisfying people who have been resisting implementation of this project. Power Company of Karnataka Ltd was asked to write to one of these institutions to conduct an audit and file a report thereof. The study, it was decided, was to also cover the aspect relating  to meeting of all the conditions of corporate social responsibility.

The central government team, which had visited the proposed site at Niddodi on May 16, had visited UPCL the same day. After visiting both the venues, the team filed its report in Bangalore the next day.

The skeletons falling out of Niddodi project’s cupboard have been giving rise to a sense of apprehension in the minds of the people, particularly so because of the tearing hurry with which the government plans to execute the project, the fact that the state government has made up its mind to commission this project, and the efforts of the concerned including people’s representatives, to conceal facts and give false promises. The people have lost their faith on repeated promises of the political leaders. It is not known whether the government will yield to the pressure of the people who are opposed to this project or not.

Kemar Swamiji opposes Niddodi project

In the meantime, Esha Vittaladasa Swamiji of Kemar Sandeepani Ashram has vehemently opposed this project. ‘It is wrong on the part of the government to try to impose projects that have the potential to destroy the ecological and environmental balance of the district, without studying the carrying capacity of the environment here. If the concerned are not prepared to shed their adamant attitude to implement this project, the district might witness a revolution of sorts against this unreasonable stand,’ he warned.

Reacting to the letter written by state chief minister, Siddaramaiah, to union energy minister, Jyotiraditya Scindia about the plant, the Swamiji called upon the religious leaders, heads of different Maths, and political parties from the state’s coast to sink their differences to join the movement aimed at resisting this project.

He has asked the leaders of the action committee opposing the project to carry out its task meticulously and with a sense of urgency, duly calling upon the media to steadfastly support this agitation. Noting that the district of late is losing its water resources at a fast pace because of various projects, he warned that the lives of the people might turn miserable if such projects continue to get imposed on the coast.

Asking all the people to shed their lethargy and come together for this purpose, he has called upon the people’s representatives, who have so far whiled away precious time in doling out unreliable promises to the people, to work to prevent Niddodi project from getting executed.

Niddodi is most probably ed for the power project because of its proximity to the port ( huge coal imports and transportation) and secondly to generate electricity from coal a vast amount of water from lakes\rivers\sea is very necessary.
If such coal based power projects are to be installed in dry\waste lands far away from port where water is not available aplenty, the cost involved to pipe the water and transport Coal from far away will be mammoth and not feasible for generating cheap electricity thereby defeating the idea of producing affordable electricity for the users.
Moreover, Niddodi is very near to the present existing power plant where the grid for carrying electricity is already existing there by reducing the work and cost of a new power grid to carry\supply power.
With all above they may have come to the conclusion Niddodi to be the best place.
If BJP Govt. comes at the center, I wonder if they will scrap this project as BJP in the State when in power gave a nod to center for this project at Niddodi.
Never Trust BJP - anyway they will blame only others but them.

    Have you forgotten Fukusima disaster?
It will take millions of years to cleanse the fallout & the damage done is irreversible(destruction of species in water, damage of DNA of people exposed as well as marine life which are contaminated which can cause cancer & deformed new generation).
Nuclear Power requires huge investment to construct, maintain & to decommission once it become impractical to continue.
They are sponsored by scientists who want plum posts in Nuclear Energy by misleading ignorant politicians.
Renewable Natural Resources is ONLY the FUTURE, which can save mother earth, than live ticking Nuclear Bombs.

The project is needed. We are starving for power and development in Karnataka. Kindly do not oppose any power project in Karnataka.

I am a small scale industrialist and know the problems without power. Many have closed down because of power shortage / cuts. It is too expensive to run an industry with generator power.

If the govt is really serious about power project in Niddodi why cant they go for gas(natural gas is nearly clean source of fuel very less pollutant in comparison with coal) based power project as the coal highly polluting and environmentally disastrous. It is learned that few politicians of north Karnataka are influencing to force the project to Mangalore to avoid effect to the environment in their areas.

Even if they come up with ten more thermal power plants, people of coastal areas will get only ashes and polluted water. Generated electricity will be diverted to Bangalore and other preferred places. As it is UPCL is facing shortage of coal supply, from where they will supply coal for the new upcoming project?

What is the use of becoming rich at the cost of our health and lack of basic staple food because of the pollution. It is better to start the project in the non agricultural area.If this trend continues,South kanara will be known as a sick place filled with patients.

I feel pity on Nature!! such an nice greenery and this so called politicians are spoiling the beauty of nature!! Definitely we need developments, We have a shortage of power supply in our D,K and we are not sure this power will be used for D.K people or it will be supplied to Bangalore. We have lot of govt land /hill area near by Karkala, venur, where there is no agriculture or any corp can grow, use that area for such project, built good infrastructure, road network and try to implement this project. .
Common we all come together and fight for this project not to implement by spoiling the beauty and greenery of our state.

    Dear Readers,
All have got good intention to safeguard the environment of our state and district. Now the point is why is such a large project Ultra Mega Power Plant(UMPP) planned in Mangalore. Did we analyze why the central n state Power distributors are zeroing on the place like Mangalore. Firstly, this is not a state Project these UMPP are for the NTPC and added to the South grid and supplied to all the needed people across the country.
Secondly, why Mangalore needs to be thought about in my understanding of the project only idea behind this is Mangalore has a good strong port which can be easily used to import coal from Indonesia which the NTPC does for their power plants. Since Niddodi is nearer to the port and transport of coal is more easy should be the strong point for the location. Regarding the support of local people. All people should take in a sensible way to talk in correct forum regarding the problems faced and the effect rather than simply bluffing the people. Is the people of the locality really know the details of the project or are they simply told this would happen n that. I think surely majority people even don't know the total idea regarding how the implementation would take place and in which manner. Readers need to think in sensible manner.

In Karnataka there is a acute shortage of power generation. For growth and progress we need an uninterrupted power supply at economical rates. There is no doubt about that.

No project should come up in any part of Karnataka without the keeping "All the interests of the local people (land owners) and pollution/danger to the environment/ecological imbalance should be addressed first without "Compromise by the Concerned State and Central Authorities".

Technology is needed today to safeguard the human well-being first and move forward and not to destroy the human settlements without addressing their problems.

I fully agree with you that we need projects, but not at the cost of damage to environment. When people in and around Padubidri stop complaining about UPCL and do not have to dust the ash from inside their homes, all other projects will be welcome. The promoters bring obsolete technologies to cut cost and reap profits. Neither the Govt. or the promoters are sincere.

Europe is closing thermal power plants one by one, while US & India go back to 20th century old most Polluting Technology of Environmental Destruction.
Implement Solar Power Generation @ Niddodi or Wind Based generation like in Europe, which take only space to produce electricity than harmful bye products of coal ash.

His highness Sri Sri Esha Vittala Swamiji of Kemar Sandipini Ashram should lead the undivided southcanara people from the front to oppose this project..as i have been told that, he is an Engineering graduate make him the right person with par excellency. This project is an no doubt will make southcanara an desert land after many years...The coal based technology is Barred in EU/US many years back as its having the environmental issues. How an eco sensitive south canara region gets green clearance..a million dollar question..The Skites should teach a lesson to the deaf and Dem politicians of SK..They all good for nothing only looking for under table offerings..this project is sole planned for the need of Bangalore/upper regions of Karnataka. The south canara has the 2000MW installed power generation capacity(UPCL1600 Varahi400MW Tannir Bavi100MW),the peek hour demand for undivided south canara is just below 200MW .No government in karnataka has the dare to ask huge land in upper politically dominated regions like Mandya/Mysore/Hassan.Save southcanara from Devils..The time had come to demand a separate state for"TULUNADU".

Power is a must for any development. Progress is measured in terms of power availability. These projects have to come somewhere. The people who sacrifice their land and living have to be suitably and honorably compensated. The politicizing the issue is no good. Discuss merits and demerits in a healthy atmosphere.
