Tendulkar 'casual labourer', MGNREGS beneficiary in Goa

Panaji, Apr 26 (IANS): Sachin Tendulkar may have won the Bharat Ratna, but according to the Goa government's records, he is a "casual labourer" and a beneficiary of the MGNREGS. And so are his wife and two children, says an NGO.

Non-governmental organisation Goa Parivartan Manch Saturday claimed to have exposed a scam in the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment GuaranteeS, where officials and politicians have been listing fictitious workers and pinching their remuneration.

"We demand a probe into the MGNREGs works in the Chimbel slum. It needs to be found out how these obviously fake names were registered as beneficiaries and who is making money on their behalf," NGO spokesperson Yathish Naik told a press conference in Panaji.

Chimbel is a slum on the outskirts of Panaji and Tendulkar finds himself an applicant against serial No. 374 of Tiswadi sub-district block.

The master cricketer's registration number is GO-01-001-028-001/10063-C.

Tendulkar's wife Anjali, daughter Sara and son Arjun are also listed in the documents unearthed by the NGO.

Tendulkar is not the only celebrity to find himself listed as a beneficiary.

Other cricket icons like former India captains Kapil Dev, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid keep him company in the list of casual workers.

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting too ekes out a living by registering himself with the MGNERGS, a flagship programme of the central government aimed at providing guaranteed employment for at least 100 days a year.

Film stars Amitabh Bachchan and Paresh Rawal are also beneficiaries of the MGNREGS, according to the beneficiaries list.

    Ganesh,

Would you have said the same if Goa is run by Congress government ? I am certain, you would never have.

Please increase your knowledge - no doubt MGNREGA is a scheme of Congress, but the funds are sent to every state for running the schemes for the poor rural people. Its the local government, which mismanages it and gives reports that the amount is spent on the program suitably.

It is really shocking to know that the Bharat Ratna Awardee Sachin Tendulkar who earned crores in cricket is a beneficiary under MNREGA. In fact the Government acted in a hurry to award Bharat Ratna to Tendulkar without checking all his background and activities in which he was involved.

Dear Mr Thakkar, Please read the news item carefully. Here the culprit is not Mr. Tendulkar or his family. Someone else are using their names fictitiously, and usurping the benefits. A few years earlier, I had come across a news item where the name of one pensioner was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (father of our nation. People use unscrupulous means to eek out money from the charity organisations. How on earth the celebrities to know this. According to your logic the other celebrities, whose names are mentioned in the news items too are frauds. Please refrain from venting out your rage where it is not accounted for.

'We gave MNREGA' the constant bickering that Pappu keeps chanting is the biggest scam & this is getting exposed now. Curiously MNREGA has been kept out of bounds of State Govts hands so that the money is going directly from the Corrupt UPA 2 to the offending scamsters in the states. MNREGA scheme & beneficiaries needs to be probed thoroughly once Modi sets in post May 16th!

Involvement of rich and the famous in various scams doesn't surprise common man any more. It has become order of the day. It remains in news until the new scam is unearthed. Involved parties with their clout and connections to get away unscathed. Behind the curtains they are all same regardless of the political party they appear to be supporting in public. During congress rule Sachin bagged Bharat Ratna, if Modi becomes PM, Bachchan too is sure to bag the same, it's kinda you scratch my back, and I'll scratch yours.
