Udupi, Apr 26: A house and all items in it were reduced to ashes due to a sudden fire that broke out in a house belonging to Laxmi Madivalthi in Baikadi, Gandhinagar, near Brahmavar.

A short-circuit is believed to have started the fire. Madivalthi locked the house and as usual had gone for work as a daily wage labourer when the house caught fire. The Udupi fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire.

Laxmi had built the house with a loan of Rs 50,000 obtained from the Sangha. She lost Rs 2 lac which she had saved after several years of hard work; gold ornaments including her Karimani weighing 7 sovereigns were also destroyed in the mishap.

The television, fridge, sofa, clothes and a scooter parked outside were also destroyed.

The people’s representatives and donors, who rushed to the spot, donated whatever they could to help her.
