Mangalore, Apr 9: “Biochemistry is a vast subject; it has become an important pillar of medicine,” said Dr Raghavendra Bhat, professor and head of medicine, Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore.
Dr Bhat was the chief guest during the inaugural function of the state level CME on ‘Evidence-based Laboratory Medicine: A Biochemical Approach’ and ‘Scintilla 2014’ - Regional Intercollegiate Quiz Competition for the medical undergraduate students organized by the department of Biochemistry, Father Muller Medical College on Wednesday April 9 at the Decennial Memorial Hall in the city.
Speaking on the occasion he said, “In 1990 experience based medicine was eroded and evidence based medicine started coming in. While evidence based treatment is more prominent, the experience based medicine still retains its importance.”
Administrator of Father Muller Medical College Hospital Fr Richard Coelho presided over the function.
Dean FMMC Dr J P Alva and organizing secretary, professor and head, department of Biochemistry Dr Malathi were the dignitaries on the dais.
Dr Bhat added, “Biochemistry helps in diagnosis and also gives the prognosis. It also helps the clinicians to substantiate their diagnosis.”
He also said that it provides an invaluable help to the clinicians.
He added that it was only through evidence based practice that the clinician is able to find the extent of the disease and the medical condition of the patient.
“Therefore the role of biochemistry in the field of medicine is irreplaceable. Evidence based practice should be made best of use of so that the doctors and the patients are thoroughly benefitted,” he concluded.
Fr Richard Coelho in his presidential address cited examples of eminent doctors and said, “Experience is the best teacher. The doctors because of their experience are well versed with the diseases and the treatments.”
He further said, “In the present scenario it is not only the experience but evidence that is needed; such is the order of the day that without evidence nothing is proved in any field.”
He said that investigations performed in the laboratories help clinicians diagnose diseases and thus the clinicians and biochemists should work hand in hand to bring out the best in them in order to provide a quality health care system.
He congratulated the department of Biochemistry for organizing a programme which would help in enriching a large number of advances taking place in the field.
He added, “In the present scenario it is not only important to refresh the role of biochemical tests in clinical diagnosis but also the recent trends in laboratory medicine.”
He concluded by saying, “CME provides an opportunity for clinicians, biochemists and all those involved in patient care to learn, share and interact and is also a chance for the participants to enrich themselves with advances in laboratory medicine.”
