Chikmagalur, Apr 4: The Delhi police have told a court here that the bombs used for setting off serial blasts at New Delhi on September 13, 2008, had been manufactured at Vittalamakki in Koppa taluk of Chikmagalur district in Karnataka. This information is contained in two separate charge sheets filed by the police in the court on Thursday April 3, against 29 terrorists functioning under Indian Mujahideen including the two Bhatkal brothers.
Out of 29 terrorists named in the charge sheet, 16 have been arrested, while 13 others are at large. Efforts to locate and take them into custody are continuing. This list contains names of Yasin Bhatkal, Riyaz Bhatkal, and Iqbal Bhatkal. The police say Riyaz is presently staying in Pakistan.
The charge sheet says that Riyaz had asked Yasin Bhatkal to arrange for the serial blasts in the capital. He also had instructed Yasin to make explosive boxes shaped like boats. Yasin visited a hardware shop in Udupi for buying nails and aluminum sheets required for the purpose, before returning to a farm house he had hired at Vittalamakki in Chikmagalur district. Once the bombs were prepared, Yasin brought them to Delhi, and with the support from some of his friends, set off serial blasts here, the policemen claim.
In the meanwhile, it is learnt that a team of National Investigation Agency, which is also investigating the role of Indian Mujahideen, will be visiting Kasargod shortly to investigate the visit of alleged IM operative Waqas (34) to Kasargod twice. It is said that during his visit to Kasargod in December 2012, Waqas had prayed in a prayer centre there twice.
Treated in Mangalore
The Delhi police, during the custodial interrogation of Waqas, have gathered information that Waqas had been treated for injuries sustained in the blast, at a secret spot in Mangalore. The agency suspects that Waqas visited Kasargod during the period of his treatment in Mangalore.
In this connection, a postgraduate student of a medical college in Trissur was arrested and interrogated by the special cell of Delhi police. This student is a resident of Ernakulam, it is learnt.
Waqas, who was injured in the blast, had come to Mangalore for treatment. The medical student had treated his wounds in a secluded place in the city. This student had met Yasin Bhatkal before Hyderabad blasts in Mangalore, it is learnt. The police also suspect that he had arranged for accommodation for Waqas and another alleged terrorist, Tehseen Akhtar, at Munnar in Kerala. The investigating officers have also discovered that this person had used a SIM card issued in the name of Rajesh from Perinthalmanna in Malappuram district.
