Mangalore Mar 27: “The PCPIR project which was recently referred to by Janardhana Poojary is a threat to our district. This is a very sensitive zone. The project will require around 70 thousand acres of land; farmers would have to forego land which will in turn affect agriculture. There will also be an indirect affect to fishing," said MLC Monappa Bhandary.
"Though there are industries like MRPL and Nagarjuna in the district, locals do not have as much of an opportunity for employment. This project will also add to the environment problems since it is not eco-friendly,” he added.
He was addressing a press meet at the BJP district election campaign office here on Thursday March 27.
He also said that “Currently, the city is facing a severe water scarcity issue. In order to rectify this issue, this project requires 640 MLD water, while at present we have access to 150 MLD water. Hence, this project is not feasible."
When questioned on the issue of ex-chairman of Karnataka State Industrial Investment and Development Corporation Yogish Bhat's decision to favor the PCPIR project; Monappa Bhandary replied “It was Yogish Bhat’s personal view point and this was not the party’s decision. Since we knew that it would pose a problem to the people, we opposed the project and we did not implement it."
On this occasion Capt Ganesh Karnik, Sathish Prabhu and others were present.
