Bangalore: Jaffer Sharief quits Congress, to campaign for JD(S)

Bangalore, Mar 25 (PTI): Congress veteran C K Jaffer Sharief, who is upset over denial of ticket to him to contest Lok Sabha polls, today said he has quit the party, snapping his six-decade old association with it.

"I have faxed my resignation from the Congress primary membership to AICC President Sonia Gandhi, but will not contest Lok Sabha elections," Sharief told PTI over telephone from Mecca, where he is on a piligrimage since March 19.

A seven-time Lok Sabha member, 83-year old Sharief, whose claim for ticket from Bangalore Central was overlooked in favour of Youth Congress wing chief Rizwan Arshad, did not share contents of his letter.

Asked whether he would join JDS to contest the April 17 Lok Sabha elections, Sharief said he does not want to be associated with one party and work within the framework of it. "However, I am ready to work for secular parties," he said.

On whether he will campaign for JDS, the former Union minister said, "Yes I would."

He also described JDS supremo Deve Gowda as a secular leader and a "good friend".

Sharief had on March 14 had indicated he was keeping open the option of joining JDS after Congress plumped for Arshad for Bangalore Central seat.

In a letter to Gowda, Sharief conveyed that he won't be contesting polls, but will be glad to work for Third Front.

Thanking Gowda and his son former Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy for offering him to contest from Mysore Lok Sabha constituency, he said, "As I had promised, I have to seek the guidance of Allah the almighty at Mecca... finally I got the guidance not to contest any Lok Sabha election from anywhere in the country."

Stating that he was free to campaign for anyone he likes, he said, "I have decided to support non-BJP secular parties. I will be glad and happy to work for Third Front."

Sharief had earlier written to Gandhi not to field any candidate against Gowda, raising many an eyebrow in Congress.

Firstly, I'd like to ask the intellectuals who have posted ill words against Shri CK JAFFER SHARIEF what has your contributions been to the country, city or community least your own neighbor. Reflect upon yourself before u spread words of such nature. As rightly mentioned by one of you it is tine for aaya ram gaya ram but his stand of bot contesting after seeking guidance from the Almighty should be honoured and respected. His national reoute and contributions attracted offers from NCP, TMC, SP, BSP, JD(S) and Shri Rajnath Singh, President of the BJP himself called upon him offering him Lok Sabha ticket or Rajya Sabha but yet he declined. This shows the nature of his leadership qualities. If the opportunistic Sharief that you speak about is true how come he hasnt taken up any offer. I would realky like to hear what anyone of you has to add to this and kindly make it valuable and not insult your own intellect.

We feel Sharief would have felt happy when a youth of his community has been given a ticket in his place. He had a long race in politics in Congress and now he is quite old and fit for retirement. He should feel happy when his party enthuse youth to attract into the party.Thanq.

Though didn't like his loyalty part but the so called young generation should learn 'the fighting spirit' from Jaffer anna. Now a days people started feeling old & hopeless in their forties. India needs people who don't loose their vigor & love for their country at any age.

It shows the loyalty of our politicians to their party through thick and thin. You give them ticket for election and they will stick with you. If they are sidelined, they will desert you. What can you expect from these selfish politicians? Election is the time one would find lots of 'Aaya Ram Gaya Ram' politicians.

Like all ,politicians also should have a retirement age ,minimum qualifications to hold any post.

It's good politicians like Jaffar sharif are coming out of active politics ,same has to apply to other politicians like hd devegowda, janardhan poojary and others. So that youth come into arena and take the mantle. Else we see one politician for generations continue to represent a particular seat. We need visionaries .and not to forget more than 50% of voters this election is represented by less than 35 years of age .

Heights of hypocrisy Quote "Thanking Gowda and his son former Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy for offering him to contest from Mysore Lok Sabha constituency, he said, "As I had promised, I have to seek the guidance of Allah the almighty at Mecca... finally I got the guidance not to contest any Lok Sabha election from anywhere in the country." Unquote ... Thanks to Allah the most beneficial and merciful and wisest for finally enlightening this man - having said this, had he been given the posting of Ambassador to Saudi by the benevolent congress - he would have grabbed it and gone on his knees (No pun intended) thanking Ms. Sonia Gandhi. Duffer Sheriff Gowda combines - are God's gift to the nation and in a small way - to their families ........ imagine the natak he would have done if the Congress party nominee in his place would have been a non Muslim !!!!! Congress is history along with the old guards like Jaffer Bai..... after six decades, rising from a jutka puller to a central minister - he has his goruse " isko boltha hai :Namka Haram" Jai Hind ..
