Udupi, Mar 25: Kaup police on Tuesday March 25 seized Rs 20 lac that was being illegally transported in a lorry.

Acting on a tip-off, Kaup police led by inspector Sunil Nayak stopped the lorry at Muloor and on inspection, found Rs 20 lac stashed under the driver's seat.

The lorry was plying from Udupi to Baikampady in Mangalore.

Police seized the lorry and took the driver, identified as Shantaram, for questioning.

It is suspected that the cash was being taken for distribution in connection with the general elections.

The driver reportedly said that he had parked the lorry near his house at Kaup on the night of Monday March 24, and took it for unloading in the morning. He claimed that he did not know who had hidden the money under the seat.

He was later handed over to Padubidri police for further investigation.
