Kasargod, Mar 24: Sunil Chandran (27), working as Jawan in Indian Border Security Force (BSF), was arrested in connection with the death of a girl student whose body was recovered from a well.
Chandran (27), a resident of Bilal Nagar in Kotekunnu, Bekal in the district, was arrested by police led by Adoor sub-inspector of police, Dayanandan.
The soldier was arrested in connection with the death of Rasina (20), daughter of Muhammed Kunhi from Katipalla, Muliyar, and he has been charged with abetment to suicide. Rasina, a final year degree student of the cooperative college in Indiranagar here, had gone missing since March 10 morning. The police attached to Adoor station, who received a complaint from the girl’s family, began investigation. Her body was found all of a sudden, from a well the next day.
As the family of the deceased expressed suspicion about possible foul play, the body of the student was sent to Pariyaram Medical College Hospital for post mortem. The post mortem report pointed at accumulation of water in the student’s stomach as the cause of her death. The police, who then verified cell phone records of the girl, found that she had been in touch with the above Jawan.
The police initially grew suspicious, as they found that the sim card had been removed from the cell phone of Rasina, and it was later found to have been cut into two pieces and thrown into the well. In the meantime, father of Rasina, during the visit of chief minister, Oommen Chandy to Kasargod last week, had requested him to conduct detailed probe into his daughter’s untimely death. The police, who coordinated with the cyber cell of their department, succeeded in arresting Sunil Chandran.
The police guess that the two came to know each other through mobile phone conversations, and this relationship gave rise to the girl’s fragile mental condition. The police were told by the teachers of Rasina’s college that she had confessed with them about the harassment she faced at the hands of Sunil Chandran, who used to frequently make calls to her on her cell phone.
