Mangalore, Mar 20: Newly-elected mayor Mahabala Maarla on Friday March 21 said that the MCC officials had violated the election code of conduct by increasing the self-assessment property tax by 15 percent.

Addressing a press meet at the district Congress office here on Friday, he said, "MCC officials increased the property tax despite being aware of election code of conduct. Though district in-charge minister (Ramanath Rai) had asked the officials to take decision on this matter only after discussing with council representatives, his advice was not followed by the officials. The council representatives were kept in the dark. This is a violation of law.

"Secondly, officials decided to increase the property tax in a meeting held on February 22. On March 6 they published an advertisement in newspaper announcing the increase in tax. This is a violation of the model code of conduct and I have written about this to the district election officer. His reply is awaited."

Maarla further said that the district Congress will keep up the promise made in party manifesto.

Former mayor Shashidhar Hegde said that the hike will be revoked.

Ibrahim Kodijal informed that the district Congress will hold convention at Town Hall here on Monday March 24 at 11.30 am. On the same day at around 9.30 am the party's office for Lok Sabha election campaign will be inaugurated in Exotica building near SCS Hospital.

On this occasion Suresh Ballal, T K Sudhir, Nazeer Bajal and others were present.

Increase tax 15 percent, but not even 15 percent damaar (tar). Mr Mayor, put damaar for all interior roads now itself. Rubbish statement by Mayor is election gimmick. District Congress will keep up the promise made in party manifesto? Congress said before the election last year, it will abolish property tax if voted. Prove yourself now, or else you will lose.

That is in the law & guidelines in the state that 15% hike is to be made in every 3 years, that what I heard. MCC officials are not responsible, but they have followed the state corporation guidelines,I believe. For this hike & election there is no connection at all,I believe.

Congress only made the promise loud and clear and all MLAs and MCC knew about it. They themselves broke the promise and now they promise to revoke? Revoke what? hike or promise?

    As per my opinion:

The government headed by Congress cannot take any decision for hiking or decreasing of prices of any commodity and taxes for movable or immovable properties.

The Election commission can increase or decrease the prices of commodities or taxes to movable or immovable property.

In this case it is not clear whether the MCC/Corporation has taken consent from the election commission.

Obviously the D.C. is the head of the election commission in Mangalore.

It is compulsory and inevitable as per the regulatory commission to raise property tax once in a stipulated period of time as the news has come earlier in Daijiworld.

Dear Krishnaraj I fully endorse your observations. These Congi MLAs are good for nothing. They all beat retreat once they come to know that they have committed blunder and put the blame on bureaucracy to save their skin. If the case pertains to minority, they all come together and penalize the officials. Why not now they support this cause.

Hello Mr. Mayor, please stop fooling the public.. Please show the paper signed by Moideen Bawa and J R LOBO, which was approved by Minister RAI.. Do u dare to question your MLA's who betrayed the Mangaloreans by Hiking the property tax from 15- 30 % ??? Now stop Barking and fooling the public.
Poojari says, he will revoke it after the Election, I would like to ask you, Whether an MP can decide whether Property tax can be hiked or not ? Whom do he Fooling around.. Does he think that all mangaloreans are FOOLS ? He himself said, that if Congi get elected there wont be tax hike for 5 years, and within a year 2 of his MLA's along with Minister signed the proposal of Property tax hike..
    THIS IS BULLS&%&T....

After property tax hike, these people have become like"Ingu thinda manga".....
What about those two MLAs Lobo and Bava, who signed on the dotted lines.Increasing the property tax does not amount to a violation of poll code of conduct. as the step is not aimed at luring the voters for any gains. But if decreased or anounced so now will amount to a violation of poll code of conduct.
