Mangalore, Mar 20: The residents of a Dalit colony at Pumpwell are facing danger due to a residential building that is coming up just in front of the colony.
The foundation for the building has been laid and the ground dug up. However, the digging has extended to such a wide area that residents of the colony, especially of two houses, are now living in anxiety, as rain may result in the collapse of the houses.
Based on a complaint by colony residents Malathi, Bhagirathi and Yashoda, mayor Mahabala Maarla and corporator Asha D'Silva inspected the spot on Thursday March 20.
The colony residents said that when they questioned the builder as to what they should if it rains and their houses collapse, they were told that they would be alternative arrangements would be made for their rehabilitation, but so far nothing has been done.
There are altogether seven houses in the colony, of which two face danger the most.
Speaking to daijiworld, Asha D'Silva said that the mayor ordered the builder to stop the construction and make alternative arrangements for the residents. "The construction will be allowed to resume only after the residents are shifted by the builder," she said.
"The contractor and engineers working on the building will meet me on Friday March 21 and discuss the issue," Asha D'Silva said.
