Mangalore, Mar 19: Deputy superintendent of Lokayukta police Umesh G Shet raided the public works department (PWD) in the city on Wednesday March 19 and verified documents related to the construction of the Bangalore-Jalsur state highway 85 that passes through Sullia taluk.
The road construction project was undertaken by contractors of Sharif Construction, Mangalore. The tender was accepted by Sharif Construction on October 5, 2012, and the work started on November 15, 2012.
The work involved widening the road upto 5.5 meters for about 33.28 km and also construction of roads in some parts. However, sources said that till now the roads have not been constructed and there has been no widening. The estimated amount for the construction was Rs 22.05 crore. Almost half of this amount has been used but the roads are still as before, it is learnt.
Umesh Shet said that many contractors are involved in this scam and he has filed a case against them. The documents will be submitted to the court and strict action taken against those involved, he said.
Project management consultant supervisor Ratnakar, Tammayya Gowda, assistant engineer from Mangalore PWD, and Gopal Nayak, executive engineer, Mangalore, are allegedly involved in the scam and a case has been filed against them and investigation is on.
The upcoming elections are leading to a rush in haphazard construction of roads. Occasionally, evidence crawls up in the form of the asphalt cracks.
Verification of the documents was held in executive engineer Gopal Nayak's office at the PWD.
