Mangalore, Mar 18: A cargo vessel that set sail from here to Lakshadweep capsized about 40 nautical miles off the coast of Mangalore North on Sunday March 16. The five crew members who were aboard were all rescued.

The crew included Bengre's Abdurrazak, his son and three other locals.

The vessel, MSV Venkamma owned by Bokkapatna's Naveen Mendon set sail on Saturday March 15 from Mangalore North dock loaded with cargo.

On Saturday at around 11 pm water began to flow inside the vessel, and by 3 am, the force of the water began to increase. The crew tried to throw out the water using the five pumps on board, but their efforts were in vain.

Realizing that it would capsize any time, the five crew members left the vessel with the help of the lifeboat and rowed away. By 8.30 am on Sunday March 16 the vessel completely sank.

The crew members who were on lifeboat in the middle of the sea spotted a fishing boat at a distance and signalled SOS by waving a piece of cloth. The fishing boat 'Guru Maruti' of Mangalore rescued the crew and brought them safely ashore.

The loss caused by the incident has been estimated at Rs 80 lac.
