50-year-old man 'fools' 50 female Face Book friends, arrested

Bangalore, Mar 18 (DHNS) : The Central Crime Branch (CCB) of the City police has arrested a 50-year-old man who had “bluffed” at least 50 of his Facebook female friends into believing that he was a “young, dashing engineering student”.

Police also arrested three other men who are suspected to have beaten up and robbed the alleged imposter after he reportedly tried to bluff a girl personally known to them.
Shyam Kumar, a resident of Nagarabhavi and father of two, allegedly cheated 50 girls whom he had befriended on Facebook using a fake account.

Police said he would contact the girls, introducing himself as a “final-year engineering student”.

As the girls accepted his overtures of friendship, he would allegedly get their mobile phone numbers and try to have a secret rendezvous with them at a mall or near a temple. Shyam Kumar’s apparent luck ran out when he contacted one of his Facebook friends two months ago and managed to get her mobile phone number. One day, he asked her to meet him at a mall or near some temple.

The girl, however, sensed something fishy and brought the matter to the knowledge of her parents, police added.

Her parents then asked seven of their family friends to investigate the matter and call Kumar’s bluff, if any. The seven men — Kumar, 27, a resident of Hanumanthanagar, Kishore, 21, from Brindavan Nagar, Punith, 27, from Banashankari 3rd Stage, Santosh, Praveen, Nikhil and Hemanth — managed to discover the true identity of Shyam Kumar. They then thought of a way to trap him.

Accordingly, they asked the girl to contact Shyam Kumar on Facebook and request him to meet her near the Subramanya Swamy temple in Hanumanthanagar on March 11. An earnest Shyam Kumar readily accepted her offer. As he reached the place by car, the seven men waylaid him, claiming that they were CCB sleuths.

They attacked him and forced him to withdraw Rs 65,000 at ATMs using different cards. They also snatched his mobile phone and the Rs 5,000 he had in his wallet. The suspects then took his wife’s phone number and threatened him with dire consequences if he disclosed the matter to anyone. Later, they called his wife from his mobile phone and told her of his “strange” hobby, the police explained. Although he was exposed, Shyam Kumar went to make a complaint to the police against the seven men. Consequently, police swung into action and arrested three of them — Kumar, Kishore and Punith.

The rest are at large, said police who are also interrogating Shyam Kumar to get to the bottom of the incident.

Dear Rudolf, "Is there Rigid age limit to have affairs". There might not be but there should be a limit to a persons decency. There are recent such cases against high and mighty and the news has gone into deep slumber. There are cases of young prefer old partners or vice versa, but that comes with mutual understanding and I call that "infatuation".

Dear Eric is there a rigid age limit rule for having affairs....hmmm!!

FYI, there are numerous individuals from both sexes who have clear preferences for much older partners, this is an individual choice and cannot be dictated!! We are dealing with humans, not robots!!!

this proves how easy to cheat girls. It should be a lesson to these girls who are crazy on internet, Facebook, friend requests.... how much ever you warn them, alert them.. they remain same , getting cheated by these social evils. Why should you blame this gentleman. if you are ready to get fooled , there are lot of folks in the society to fool you. It's your duty to get caught in such traps. Anyways, his mistake is also inexcusable. Should be punished heavily. but girls, please learn some lessons.

Don't listen to anything that you are told,
Being 50 is great, you are not really so old.

Just because your knees are weak doesn't mean you are getting old,
And if your hands a little shaky, it's still nice enough to hold.

And even if your gums are starting to recede,
You can always buy more teeth if you really feel the need.

50 year old flirting with young girls. Absolute shame. Flirting is a habit that every human (more with men) has it as there are many ways of doing it that are absolutely good and also absolutely bad, but it should be done in a decent way that the opposite sex appreciates it. This 50 year old could have flirted with the opposite sex of age anywhere between 40 to 45. But he went overboard and got thrashed a lesson to learn.

Do two wrongs make one right ? No !

By beating up the imposter, the seven made themselves the accused and him a victim. They should have rather handed over him to the police !

Now, where will the women he hoodwinked through the FB fit in ? Who will file a case against this ?

@Lydia The girl is also at fault. Doesn't mean that she has to have affairs with all friends she has on fb. If she knew that something was fishy, she could have ignored him.

    Nelson,

It is primarily the girl's first fault to have believed someone through FB. However, she was cautious enough to have informed her elders about him. Now, why those who found out that the guy is fraud, had to beat him up ? This is equal to moral policing. They should have instead informed the police to catch him red-handed !

@Lydia. I agree with you. FB does have its merits and demerits. It all depends on the mentality of the user. You can use it for praising your god and also for defaming and cheating your fellow men as well.
