Udupi, Mar 14: The district BJP on Saturday March 15 held a massive padayatra (rally on foot) and protest at Parkala here, against the proposed expansion of the national highway from Udupi to Teerthahalli via Hebri and Agumbe.

BJP Lok Sabha candidate and former energy minister Shobha Karandlaje inaugurated the padayatra while the protest was led by former MLA Raghupati Bhat.

Addressing the gathering, Shobha Karandlaje said that the Congress government had completely failed to provide an able administration. Training guns on union transport minister Oscar Fernandes who hails from Udupi and under whose ministry the highway expansion project will be undertaken, she said there was no need to learn any lesson in administration from Oscar.

"When BJP was in power in the state, several development works had been undertaken in Udupi. But the Congress government as failed to do so. The people of the coastal region, especially farmers, fishermen and backward classes are facing several problems, but the government has failed to address their grievances. I will strive to become the voice of the people if I am elected," she said.

Backing former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa along with whom Karandlaje rejoined the BJP in January, she said, "Yeddyurappa is a wise person and a true leader. He was the first person to bring railway services to city area. It is no exaggeration to say that most of the developments in the transport sector were done by the BJP during its regime."

Referring to the expansion plans of the highway, she said, "The present government should suggest alternative ways to existing problems. We cannot get back our lands with just compensation. It is not enough. Hence Oscar Fernandes, MP (J P Hegde) and MLA (Pramod Madhwaraj of Udupi should withdraw this highway widening project at the earliest."

She further said, "The nation is facing economica and political crisis due to the Congress-led UPA government. For all the problems there is only one solution - Narendra Modi (BJP PM candidate). The upcoming elections will prove the power of BJP."

Karandlaje said she was selected as the candidate from Udupi-Chikmagalur constituency as she wishes to become the voice of the people here. "If I win the election, I will render my service with dedication to the poor in the rural areas. We need support of the people. It is not a question of winning the election alone, but more so of the future of the people here," she said.

Raghupati Bhat in his address spoke about the mismanagement of the ruling party and explained the demerits of the highway expansion project, and the problems of the municipality with regard to shortage of water supply.

Udupi district BJP chief Thingale Vikaramjuna Hegde, Raghavendra Kini, BJP city president, former district BJP president Udaykumar Shetty, Dinkar Herga, former BJP president Upendra Naik, zilla panchayat president Narasimha Naik and others were present.

Shrimaan Narayan, I am sure that you support Modi as your next PM. Do you know why BJP has ed him as their PM Candidate ??? Any idea ?? In which sense he is more eligible than Sushma or Jaitly or Advani ?? Only because as three time Chief Minister, he has transformed Gujrath in to a Model Developed State in India. His priority was better Road connectivity, Power Production and Water and Land availability. Now opposing the NH 169A Expansion you are going against your own future PM's Visionary Development. Oh! Sorry now UPA is doing it or precisely Oscar is doing it, so let us oppose it, and tomorrow if Modi comes let us welcome it. Is not it ?? Udupi people may not need it but Shimoga, Davangere and surrounding Traders may need it to export their goods through Mangalore or Karwar Port, who knows tomorrow Malpe Port may develop into a all weather Port.

With a few more people like you who say "This land belongs to my family" India won't develop.

Good roads and highways are like nerves in a human body. Absolutely essential, without good highways our economy will come to a standstill.

    Abhishek,You are 100% right.
By protesting against highway project, BJP is EXPOSED.
    They are against development.
BJP & Shobhakka are jealous of Transport Minister Oscar getting credit for Road development.
Oscar is getting credit for working for our region and people.
Again proved that BJP has No principles, don't want area development.
SHOBHAKKA & bjp Just WANT TO SAY WHAT OSCAR, Transport Minister HAS DONE TO HIS CONSTITUENCY!
How Highway can be built without land acquisition, over AIR?
Shobhakka's only contribution is preventing development.

What a joke. Because of her mentors government the road starting from karwar to Mangalore was a death traps. Because of their full support to mining barons. Now when roads get organized by repairs and widening, she came to take credit. People will laugh on her for this statement. Jai Hind

What Shobha and Bhat saying is clear. Don't allow UPA to do highway expansion work. BJP will do it when it comes to power if that happens. Before protesting they should promise the people that BJP will never do this highway expansion work. They are fooling the people as usual.

How can any highway be expanded without land acquisition? over Air?

This is TOTALLY WRONG ON PART OF BJP. This fraud party is misleading people.... in order to attract investment in the region and reduce traffic congestion along west coast, we require 4-6 lane highways in Karnataka. For that matter even Uttar Pradesh too has super highways.

Hopeless Shobha is working against Udupi and Mangalore People of Udupi should send her packing. She is a non performer and she did nothing when she was a minister in Karnataka.

All these days BJP was a bit upset as there were no road shows by them for a few days in Udupi area.
They cannot stay away from the road as they are only good for being on the road shouting themselves hoarse, to keep their goondas occupied and confirming they are always anti-development.
"By Hook or Crook" are their ways to win in any election.
There will be more trouble from them as the election approaches.
