Mangalore: Cine actors, fashionistas make style statement with khadi

Mangalore, Mar 14: It was all glitz and glamour at Town Hall here on Thursday March 13 as well-known personalities clad in khadi saris and other varieties of khadi attire walked the ramp and exhibited a traditional fashion statement.

The event ‘Namma Nadige Khadi Kadege’, the first of its kind in the city, was organized by Mangalore Institute of Fashion Technology (MIFT).

The tradition fashion show was attended by more than 10 married couples clad in khadi attires of stunning colours. Adding to the beauty was the cheer of the crowd which reached a crescendo when senior couples appeared fashionably dressed. Even as they walked the ramp, the audience demanded an encore and they were asked to walk again, much to the delight of the crowd.

Cast of 'Nirel' Tulu movie including lead actor Anoop Sagar and co-producer San Poojary promotion the movie and also walked the ramp. Among other personalities who participated were Bollywood director Sandeep Malani, Tulu cinema actors Karthik Banjal and Arjun Kapikad Miss Mangalore Faheema Fathima, Mr Mangalore Puneet Jayadev, former Mr World Raymond D'Souza, Charan Suvarna and Anupama Suvarna of Fashion ABCD, fashion photographer Suhail Mangalore, photographer Bhaskar Amtoor and others.

Alongside, students of MIFT also participated in the ramp walk. Youths wearing khadi seemed a blend of traditional heritage and modernity.

Earlier, during the formal inauguration of the programme, district governor of Lions Club inaugurating the programme said, "Khadi is a symbol of self-respect. I am happy to see people participating in good numbers in the khadi fashion show. In fact, we need to encourage the current generation to use khadi as against other clothing materials."

Director of MIFT M G Hegde in his address said, "The programme was organized to promote khadi industry. Promoting this would boost rural economy.  Had khadi been promoted right from the beginning, unemployment could have been eradiated in the country," he added.

During the programme, writer Rajshekhar, cine-director Chandrahas, businessman Ashok Kumar, director of Mangalore Akashavani Vasanth Kumar Perla and others were present.
