Mangalore, Mar 13: The Institutions’ Day cum Graduation Ceremony-2014 of Father Muller Charitable Institutions (FMCI) was held in a grand manner at the Father Muller Stadium, Kankanady here on Thursday March 13.

Dr V M Katoch, secretary, department of health research, government of India, and director general, Indian Council of Medical Research, was the chief guest on the occasion. Dr Anil K D’Cruz, director, Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, was the guest of honour. Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza, bishop of Mangalore diocese, and president, FMCI, presided over the occasion.

Fr Patrick Rodrigues, director, Fr Ravi Rudoplh D’Sa, administrator, Fr Richard Coelho, administrator, Fr Vincent Saldanha, Fr Roshan Crasta, assistant administrator,  Dr J P Alva, dean, Dr Shivaprasad K, principal, Sr Winifred D’Souza, prinicpal, Jasmine Vas, principal, and Akhilesh P M, principal, were  present on the dais.

Fr Patrick Rodrigues welcomed the dignitaries and the gathering and read out the reports of the academic year.

A total of 628 graduates from various branches of medical education were awarded graduation certificates and administered the oath. They included 266 graduates from Father Muller Medical College, 81 from Father Muller Homeopathic Medical College, 178 from Father Muller Medical College of Nursing, 85 from Father Muller School of Nursing, and 18 from Father Muller College of Speech and Hearing.

Achievers in various fields were also awarded and felicitated on the occasion.

Addressing the gathering, Dr V M Katoch said, "The medical profession is different though other professions are also committed to serving people. The medical profession needs to emphasize on commitment to society. Collecting wealth or money is not important, and focus should be on becoming good human beings. Our goals may be anything but our service should be unquestionable. The medical professionals should concentrate on their responsibility in the era of commercialization."

“The nurses and other staff of a hospital need to be respected with greater regard than a doctor. Nurses and other staff spend more time in caring for a patient whereas the doctor visits only at specific times,” he added.

Dr Anil D’Cruz said Father Muller Institutions have been growing very fast. "The strength per branch has gone up to 150 from 100 and the total bench strength has gone up to 1,250 from 1,000. So many prizes recognized by various universities have been distributed to many graduates today and it shows the institute is a premier one in the country and this is very visible. Medical field is a highly responsible one. Your studies are not over after you graduate in health science, but continue at every step and aspect of your professional career. While conducting a test on a patient, please do treat the patient as if they are your dear and near ones and only then you will get the test perfect and right.

"Always be at your best when you treat your patients because if you make mistakes, you will never forgive yourself," he added.

In his presidential address, Bishop Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza said, "People will surely come to know about you and that you are from Father Muller when you grow into caring, loving, and helpful doctors. The management and faculty of Father Muller Institutions have strived very hard to make all of you a better doctor and a better person in life. We are immensely grateful to Father Muller Hospital staff for taking care of patients and for their dedication to their work."

Fr Rudolph Ravi D’Sa delivered the vote of thanks. Entertainment programme by the students of the institution followed the formal ceremony.

Out of 628 how many of them will remain in India and serve the sick and sufferings?
Serve means what free serve? Everyone one is serving one or other way, but the field is different.
