Moodbidri, Mar 13: Supriya D Shetty has been elected president and Eliza Menezes vice president in the Moodbidri Municipal Council elections held on Thursday March 13.
The posts were reserved for the general women’s category. Moodbidri Tahsildar Mohammed Isac conducted the elections and declared the names of the winners in the afternoon.
There was provision for submitting nominations between 10.30 am and 12.30 pm. Shetty submitted her nomination around 11.30 am. Harinakshi proposed the name of Shetty and Ratnakar Devadiga consented to this.
Menezes submitted her nomination for the post of vice-president at 11.37 am. Shakuntala proposed her name and Mohammed Bashir consented to it.
Shetty, who stood for elections for the first time from Kallabettu, 19th ward, has become the president in her first attempt. Similarly, Eliza Menezes, who had won from Karinje, 20th ward, has become the vice president for the first time. Both of them were elected to the council for the first time and it is the first time that they got elected as president and vice president under the reservation for women in the general category.
The two will be taking over power within the next 15 days.
Out of 23 wards of Moodbidri, Congress had 14 seats, BJP 5, JD(S) 3, and CPM 1. Of these, 10 members from the Congress and BJP were new and the new administration has been formed with 7 women from Congress and 1 from JD(S).
Senior members Bahubali Prasad, P K Thomas, former president Ratnakar Devadiga, Harinakshi, and former vice president Ramani are in the new administration. As the Congress enjoyed majority, the election got over without any confusion.
Minister Abhayachandra Jain, block Congress president Meghanand Shetty, Congress leaders Chandrahas Sanil, Sampat Samrajya, chief executive Rayappa, Yashaswini, and revenue inspector Dhananjay were present during the elections.
