Karkala: Fed up with government apathy, locals build temporary dam over lake

Karkala, Mar 12: Citizens of Irvathur Hosabettu region have built a dam by themselves to meet their agricultural needs.

Shambavi Lake in Renjala rural area flows to Sanooru village.  It is the only source of water for the villagers. A dam was built in Irvathur- Hosabettu area about 25 years ago. However, the dam got washed away in water apparently due to inferior quality work or normal erosion.  The local administration did not come forward to build another dam after that incident.

The local people built their own temporary dam for their annual agricultural
needs.  They use mud, stones, and sand for this purpose and use the water that gets blocked. This has been their practice every year.

The local people have urged the government to build a permanent dam to solve their problems.

The government has been saying that agriculture is the backbone of the
country.  However, it has been taking too long to support the cause. The elected representatives are responsible for the lethargy.  The funds from the gram panchayat, taluk panchayat, or zilla panchayat will not be enough for the purpose.  The project will require help from MLA’s funds besides the irrigation department.  Only then can the dream of the villagers be realized.

We need more of these in our villages going forward. Every step has to be taken to store the rain water in as many places as possible. The villagers need to get a access to finance from banks and other NGOs to construct permanent structures which will benefit for longer periods. We cannot expect everything from the Govt.

Mr. Shetty - If the Minister has to do all these works by himself, why do we need MLAs\MPs\Panchayats\and all those sundries.
Your anger\frustration should be directed against those responsible to carryout\complete the work which the Minister had allotted to them.
But you can write to the Minister drawing his attention to the apathy of the lower rung officials for his action against them.
BJP followers should learn this first instead of barking at the wrong tree.
I would appreciate your efforts to meet the Panchayat officials and the Local MLA (BJP) to help these villagers in their plight.
God will bless you and I will be the first one to applaud your efforts and pray for your good health.

Whoever comes to ask for votes, get a written assurance from the candidate. If needed prepare a legal document and obtain his signature with two witnesses. Take him/her to court, if he/she fails to fulfil the promise. Anyway, congratulations to the local people for their initiative. Though it is a small bridge, the efforts should be appreciated. Thanks to Daijiworld for bringing this matter to the public.

Politician say "We will do this, we will that and what not. In the end they do for themselves, is there any fool to stand for election and do good for you, its only for their benefit. Bravo and hats off to the locals, all the villages should be united and start doing good in their own area and just dump these greedy politicians, when they come for votes just treat them like beggars and give them alms and your remaining food.

It looks funny for me the claims the politicians are making. 24 hours of electricity, 24 hours of water supply, roads like that of US, etc. and promisse after promisse of development. And we fools believe and vote for them later this what the result, they dont remember us. Due to these party politics, we hate each other, fight each other and after election nobody bothers us.I dont know when we are going to learn lessons.
