Karkala, Mar 12: Citizens of Irvathur Hosabettu region have built a dam by themselves to meet their agricultural needs.
Shambavi Lake in Renjala rural area flows to Sanooru village. It is the only source of water for the villagers. A dam was built in Irvathur- Hosabettu area about 25 years ago. However, the dam got washed away in water apparently due to inferior quality work or normal erosion. The local administration did not come forward to build another dam after that incident.
The local people built their own temporary dam for their annual agricultural
needs. They use mud, stones, and sand for this purpose and use the water that gets blocked. This has been their practice every year.
The local people have urged the government to build a permanent dam to solve their problems.
The government has been saying that agriculture is the backbone of the
country. However, it has been taking too long to support the cause. The elected representatives are responsible for the lethargy. The funds from the gram panchayat, taluk panchayat, or zilla panchayat will not be enough for the purpose. The project will require help from MLA’s funds besides the irrigation department. Only then can the dream of the villagers be realized.
