Sullia: N A Ramachandra of BJP elected president of town panchayat

Sullia, Mar 12: For the first term of this five-year tenure of the town panchayat, N A Ramachandra from BJP was elected as the president, while Meenakshi from the same party got elected as vice president on Tuesday March 11.

The post of the president was reserved for general category, and N A Ramachandra (BJP) and K Gokuldas (Congress) had filed their nominations. Ramachandra secured 13 votes, one from MLA, S Angara, and the others from elected BJP members of the town panchayat. Gokuldas secured five votes from his party members. Ummer, who represents Social Democratic Party of India, chose to remain neutral. For the post of the vice-president, which was earmarked for scheduled tribe, lone nomination filed by Meenakshi D was received. Hence she was declared elected unopposed.

The election process was conducted by tahsildar, Roopa. Chief officer of the town panchayat, Rohitaksha, was present.

Ramachandra has got elected to the town panchayat four times, and had functioned for one term as president, once as vice president, and twice as chairman of standing committees. Meenakshi had earlier got elected twice, and had worked once as vice president and another time as acting president.
