Mangalore: Rigorous imprisonment for chain snatchers Vincent and Naveen

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Mar 12:The chief judicial magistrate’s court here has sentenced two persons, who were charged with snatching chains from women found alone on roads, to two years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5000 in each of the two cases decided against them. They have also been ordered to undergo an additional six months in jail in case of failure to pay up the fine. The convicted persons are Naveen Sequeira (39) from Chembugudde in Tokkottu, and Vincent D’Souza (48) from Hoigebail in Ullal.

Vincent, who lost a leg in a train accident several years ago and hence walks with the help of a prosthetic leg, used to host marriage and other ceremonies, while Naveen worked as a waiter in a hotel.  Vincent met Naveen during his visits to the hotel, and both planned to make easy money, it is said. While Naveen rode the motor bike, Vincent, who occupied the pillion, snatched chains from the necks of gullible women.

At present, the accused have been pronounced guilty in two out of four cases they are facing. Two more cases are pending in the court.

One of the charges faced by the above people was snatching of a 55 grams Karimani chain valued at Rs 90,000 from the neck of Geeta Balakrishna from Bejai at around 6.45 pm on February 13, 2012, when she was walking towards KSRTC bus stand from Lalbagh in the city. Geeta had filed a complaint at Barke station. In the other case, these thieves had divided a chain they had snatched from Sumangala Bhat from Derebail Abbakka Nagar when she was walking to her home on October 9, 2012, by cutting it into two pieces. This chain was valued at Rs 70,000. This case was registered in Urva police station.

The policemen, working on the basis of definite clues, had arrested both the accused when they had approached a financial institution for pawning the robbed gold ornaments.

Able bodied men like Vincent and Naveen,
Should have opted to Cooli jobs to earn a livelihood and blessings.
Cooli job is creative instead of robbing to snatch others happiness and invite curses.

It may be a fair judgement. But what about the ornaments of the women? Should they not get back their ornaments or alternatively should they not get the value of those ornaments from these chain snatchers? This is not fair to the women who took the trouble of registering the complaints and following them up? They need to get their ornaments back. In fact the people who purchased these ornaments also should be prosecuted and recover these ornaments from them.

After two years they come out and start the same. Instead in such cases better to remove their right hand or one leg so that they cannot drive the bike and snatch chains. This will be a good lesson for them as well as the others who are in the same business. Our IPC should be changed according the present cruelties.

One can't blame TIME or SITUATION...!! For example...Sanjay Dutt or Salman Khan...what kind of TIME or SITUATION they might have in when they committed crime?!! We the human race are called unique only because we have that 'thinking capacity' 'judging capacity'...why don't we use that instead of blaming time or situation!!?

Brother if anybody is a criminal and belongs to a particular community don't have a soft corner for them. When you show empathy/justify towards/for them you are indirectly promoting crimes and criminal activity. Misfortune befalls on people who lack faith and do not have the fear of GOD. There are good and bad persons in every community, accept that facts are sometimes stranger than fiction. Change your mindset and accept truth....Mamu!

Stringent punishment for chain snatching will act as a stern deterrent for others in this business!! But, unless rehabilitated, these people are bound to indulge again in repeat crimes when they are free, which studies have shown!!

But what about the white collar thugs operating at the highest levels involved in white collar looting via the stock markets, financial markets, banking, educational conglomerates, realty, rampant medical malpractices, high end corruption, those looting the gullible in the guise of religion and God, all moving scot free with their head held high, enjoying all the luxuries of life, getting great respect all because they are rich and influential??? 100s of thousands of crores of sweat money of the gullible and the law abiding, tax payer is being siphoned off in a regular manner every year with not even one conviction done.......OMG!!! Where is the justice? Let us remove our "horse blinders" and watch keenly around us who the real looters are!! Jai Hind!!

I fear they have to steal again to fund the fair trial. All they needed was a good job and rehabilitation. I also object their name and photo published on media, they may face discrimination , both are normal citizens and have to live in society.
