Mangalore, Mar 9: Congress leader and former union minister Janardhan Poojary won the Congress primary (internal election) by garnering 478 out of the total 547 votes that were cast.

The candidate for the primary, U K Monu, could manage to win only 62 votes.

Out of 598 names in the voting list, only 547 were able to cast their votes, either due to failure to produce voter id cards or for coming late.

With this, Janardhan Poojary has been declared the Congress candidate from Mangalore constituency. He will be up against Nalin Kumar Kateel of BJP.

Earlier Report

The voting for the crucial Congress primary (internal elections) began at Rosario School grounds here on Sunday March 9.

The process began with the registration of voters between 9 am and 11 am. Those who arrived after 11 am were not allowed to enter. Also, those who did not possess voter id cards too were disqualified. Thus, though the final voting list consisted of 598 names, many were unable to cast their votes.

Incidentally, Mangalore North MLA Mohiuddin Bava too came late to the venue and had to return without casting his vote.

After registration, the party workers and leaders had a meet at Rosario hall wherein the two candidates Janardhan Poojary and U Kanachur Monu addressed the party workers.

As Janardhan Poojary came up to speak first, the party workers erupted into an applause, but Poojary asked them to maintain silence. "This is a family election for us to choose our candidate for the Lok Sabha polls. Hence, no one should applaud or celebrate after results are out. The procedure should be peaceful. Whoever wins, we should all work for him with unity. Choose a candidate who is honest, with good attitude and who can speak in the parliament," he said.

Commenting on the clashes at Kalladka on Saturday March 8 when Sangh Parivar members barged into Congress convention, Poojary said, "We were there (Kalladka) for a peaceful convention aimed at fostering communal harmony. But people did not let us do that. BJP has been creating a fearful atmosphere. There should be no hatred. Today you (party workers) have the power to select your candidate. Vote for the person who works towards peaceful co-existence."

"Do not shout slogans after today's election. Ultimately it is the Congress that should win. You should win. This is our message to the opposition. We have to be united. If Narendra Modi (BJP PM candidate) is instilling hatred across the nation, Prabhakar Bhat (RSS leader) is doing so in our district. By 6 pm today we will give a strong message to the communal party," he said.

U Kanchur Monu in an emotional speech thanked the Congress high command for giving an opportunity to a loyal party worker like him to contest for the elections and said, "For the first time in the history of India everyone in the party has got an opportunity to contest for the elections. For 40 years I have been a sincere party member, working with  secular ideology."

Recalling his journey over the years and the hurdles he faced, he said, "Despite poverty, I worked hard and became a businessman. A few people who affectionately called me 'Monu' later verbally attacked me for contesting the primary. I have been going through much pain over the last one week. When I went to block levels I was stopped by a few people. I have been a supporter of Janardhan Poojary and even took part in all his campaigns."

AICC secretary Shantaram Naik administered an oath wherein the candidates and party workers pledged to wholeheartedly support the candidate who wins the primary.

After the meet, voting began in 8 polling booths corresponding to the eight Assembly constituencies of the district.

Prominent among those who cast their votes were ministers U T Khadar, Ramanath Rai, Abhaychandra Jain, MLA J R Lobo, former MLA Vijaykumar Shetty, P V Mohan and others.

AICC teams from other states oversaw the procedures, ensuring that late comers were not allowed to vote.

Returning officers Pramod Kumar and Praniel Nair, Prakash Joshi and others were present.

After the voting, counting will begin and results will be declared.

Primary was like KG exam for JP because main Contender Harsha Moily was debarred from Exam for Copying.
Secondary is going to be tough for JP as the contender is a tough man, and equally honest with a clean image, and all those rumours spread by Nalin's detractors have failed to make any impact on people.

Dakishina Kannada janarege onde Daree, adu B. Janardhana Poojary,

All the best Poojary sir, this is your last chance, we wish you all the very best. However, we feel why congress, especially Mr. Rahul Gandhi who talks about youth and women empower, did not give a ticket to a youngster or a woman candidate. Mr. Poojary is old horse, there will not be much benefit for Dakishna Kannada to send him to Delhi as an MP, as it is 100% sure Congress led UPA will not come to power at Center, Congress supporter can stand on top of the roof and shout as much they want, nothing is going to happen, people have made up their mind, its finitho for Congress, they can sit in the opposition, they don't deserve a 3rd term, not after so much corruption, scams, bad governance, they will sit in Opposition bench and lick their wounds, sorry congress better luck next time.
We need a change, had enough of this UPA, best ion is AAP (Aam Admi Party), we request sensible, intelligent Indian voters to elect and AAP candidates, they are clean and non corrupt, they will work for you. Please don't vote for Corrupt communal BJP, remember what happened in Karnataka for past 5 yrs.

I mean Nalin Kumar Kateel everybody knows by now what he is fit for as a MP.
He wasted MP fund only for Narendra Modi's Banner and he would go only for temple inauguration or ribbon cutting ceremony.
This time we would like to see janardhan poojary winning.
    Please vote for Poojary.

Everybody should know that even if BJP wins 250 seats also (which is not possible) Narendra Modi will definitely not be the PM of India.

Here is a man who really wants to win an election by contesting.
poojary is definitely not like other leaders who directly would ask for a Rajyasabha member and become a minister.
If poojary wants to contest the election at this age means there must be something in him. A desire definitely to serve people. Why he wants to contest only in Mangalore that is what one should note here ? I am sure had he contested in any other part may be udupi or mumbai he would have won.
He is the one who will support for anybody's candidature and work hard for the party.
But because of this idiot moily's dirty politics he is not winning.
Poojary will campaign, even for a panchayat election or corporation election wholeheartedly doing padayatra and other things, but have you ever seen moily campaigning for the party in Mangalore, Karkala or Udupi district. can anybody tell me when did moily campaign in Mangalore for any of the elections that were held be it for the last ten years. This man moily knows only to play politics and do divide and rule like what britishers did.

I am sure because of moily, poojary may lose once again for the last time.
but definitely mangalore cannot have a leader like poojary for few more years.
Just one more question what is contribution of moily to Mangalore ?
    1. I think if one can say .He has not allowed the congress to win in the last 20 years or so in Mangalore.
    2. He has made two parties in Mangalore.
    2. Now he is trying to divert the river netravati.( which is almost empty in March-april and people of mangalore don't get water during april may)

I think people of Mangalore should vote for poojary, for his dedicatedness for the party and for the work that he does .

Somebody was saying that you should give a chance to young people see what Mr Nalin Kumar has done ??

nalin kumar kateel as an MP has spent all his MP funds in projecting MODI as PM. for his banners, chai pe charcha and NAMO brigade.
But what if poojary had been the MP can anybody think

Whoever wins, either Poojary or Nalin Kumar that will only add to the LS seats! Both are useless for our constituency as far as development is concerned!

We are expecting a landslide margin against BJP in Mangalore LS Constituency.Party functionaries in fact, given their YES vote to Mr J.Poojari as expected because he is an senor most loyal congress worker be he in power or not.Unlike in BJP senior most leader denied a chance for MODI!!!That is the difference between BJP and other parties.INTERNAL ELECTION IS GOOD PRECEDENT BUT ACCEPTANCE OF HARSHA's NOMINATION FOR PRIMARY IS BAD PRECEDENT.HARSHA SHOULD WORK @ LEAST 5 YEARS IN MANGALORE AND PERHAPS HE MAY STAKE MANGALORE SEAT NEXT TIME ALONG WITH MONU.Finally, JP has a daunting task to take all groups jn his kitty....Anyhow that will not deter his huge victory.

I welcome this move of internal democracy / primaries, where members can choose their candidate. This is exactly how its done in developed democracies.

This method is way far better than 'Kalladka sangha' foisting a radical, semi literate and inept politician down our throat since 1991.

It's time to change this trend!

The country needs a leader who strives for peace and harmony.Whoever tries to win the election delivering hatred speech, not only hates the party or the person whom he speaks of but he hates his own country.

..Crucial primary election Congress MLA Bava is late comer!!..Good see Jannanna winning primary..tomorrow Moily will be awarded ticket from Chikkaballapur..However, for Both Nalin & Jannanna the internal conflict/back stabbing only the major factor for winning or loosing..Jannanna should beware of Moily & co and Nalin should beware of PP Hegde & co..

Time to bring a new energetic horse instead of the old horse. This will not be able to put up a fight against other strong horses. It will be a lost battle.

That's the last victory for Poojarji in his carrier.

By the by In a major embarrassment for the Congress, Dr Bhagirath Prasad, a retired IAS officer from Madhya Pradesh from the party has joined the BJP less than 24 hours after being named in the former's first list of candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
HAHAHA, people who have congress tickets are also deserting the party.

    Mr.Henry,
Vote AAP only if it can win!
We have to assess the situation carefully.
    Our vote shouldn't go waste.
Vote should work the way we want in the given situation.
If AAP has no scope of winning, then we should vote other party of our choice.
    We should vote intelligently.

This time the battle is between BJP & Cong...AAP might have to wait for 2019 or 2024 to make it big in Mangalore.

However, most Mangaloreans irrespective of their party affiliations in Mangalore - Udupi are seen supporting AAP in North India.

Rahul must be credited for Inter party democracy in Congress.
Siddu was successfully chosen for C.M. through secret ballot.
Sonia Gandhi was chosen by Congress party leaders to lead. She had divested the powers to Veteran Narasimha Rao to be P.M. and Sitaram Kesari to be Congress party Chief.

    Thanks Sudhakar,
Person holding authority or rights divesting on her own, appropriate meaning would be:
    i. Cease to hold,
    ii.to free of
    iii.dispossess
    iv.reduce
Person having Higher authority divesting the authority given to junior would be:
    i. stripping
    ii. denial.
Here I meant, Sonia Gandhi herself cease to hold, to free of, the possession she inherited. Thanks.
