Mangalore: Gold worth Rs 8 lac found in flight from Dubai

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Mar 5: The customs officials at the airport here unearthed a consignment of gold that was being smuggled into the country through an Air India Express flight that landed here from Dubai on Tuesday March 4 morning.

Acting on information, customs officials conducted a thorough check of the aircraft after it landed here. They reportedly found gold hidden in a bag that was kept by the side of a seat.

The person who brought this gold from Dubai had disembarked from the aircraft at the airport here. His associate was supposed to travel by this aircraft from the city to Mumbai, duly collecting this bag after boarding the flight.

The officials said that this modus operandi was adopted by the gold smugglers in the past too, with several such cases having come to light during the last some months.

It may be recalled that in a similar case reported in October last year, a man from Kasargod was arrested for trying to smuggle one kg of gold approximately worth Rs 25 lac. The man had demanded that he be given a particular seat in the Jet Airways aircraft that had landed from Dubai and was about to fly to Mumbai. The customs officials, growing suspicious at his persistent demands for the seat, conducted a search of the aircraft and found the gold hidden under the seat. The gold had been placed by an accomplice who boarded the flight from Dubai, and the person from Kasargod was supposed to recover it from the seat and hand it over to a person in Mumbai. The aircraft that flies from Dubai to Mangalore proceeds to Mumbai, where it lands in the domestic terminal which has no customs check. Smugglers have hence time and again tried to exploit this loophole to their advantage.

Some days back there was a news from Daiji that based on a genuine tip off received passed on from DXB to Mangalore, Jet Airways had 7 kgs of gold hidden in the aircraft ... that the aircraft was ''conditionally'' left to Bombay after a 2 hour delay (the search proved futile .... its toilet/s sealed) and on a guarantee due to fewer aircraft available at that time, the authorities were compelled to bring it back to Mangalore (yes it came back). It looks like somebody from the toilet of Jet Airways ''passed on'' the gold on to Air India Express aircraft (parked parallel to each other) on a condition that 1 kg of gold would be given to them as ''special handling charges''. So we now very well know how and where the gold came from. Ha ha. There is a big drama going on at the airports to gain superiority name and fame.

RBI should regulate the gold rate in india, cheaper than that gold sold at dubai, and put a permanent fullstop for smuggling.

There are so many questions arise...i don't agree officials just catch them and say smugglers ...1) Of course, some rich businessmen from India ask passengers to get gold...Indian government never taken any step go in detail to catch who is behind ..2) if custom official's catch then where the Gold goes....3) why the government can't increase the amount allowed to carry Gold from Gulf....4) have to appreciate government..it is very strict against Gold smuggling but Generally why law & order so poor in India are they are only good at Gold hunt...5) usually government must lean on this because Gold is other mean of currency and whts worng if it is brought from legal money...instead of catching them ask to pay tax and let go...

Metal detector passed the yellow metal after detecting it.In fact everything will be placed in the x ray machine including body scan.Yesterday, there was a gold catch in Mumbai Airport as most of the Custom Officials gathered there which resulted in gathering more passengers. Finally, nearly 200 passengers are let free in the queue without putting their luggage in the X ray in NOTHING TO section(FORMERLY known as green Chanel)Also one man(stranger)claimed that he has 7 gold coins in his possession!!!I asked him did X ray in country of residence, he told S!!!!So these are tip of the iceberg. For the overseas passengers' information..NOT YET NEW CUSTOMS RULES BEING IN TO EFFECT(04/03/2014)

@Aadil Khan, why Dubai has to worry about the gold pass through it's hi-tech security system. It is free hub for gold business.NO one will ask you if u carry/exit with tons of gold. It is your responsibility to check u r country's custom law can allow you to carry in. I can blindly say, Mangalore Airport made history in the world, both positively (Gold income) and negatively (AIE accident)

Just stupid idea. One can not play this game with the hard earned money. It is a sort of casino, do or die case.

Wonder, how so much of gold is passed through metal detectors and hi-tech x-rays at the security check in Dubai airport!
