UPA largesse on coal linkage: Karnataka plans 2 thermal power plants

Bangalore, Mar 4: With a largesse expected from the Congress-led UPA regime soon, Karnataka is planning to set up two new thermal power plants to meet the growing demands for power in the State.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a programme organised in Bangalore on Tuesday to sign Power Purchase Agreements for getting 892 MW of power from the Kudankulam nuclear power plant and the Damodar Valley Corporation of India, Energy Minister D K Shivakumar said the UPA regime was expected to provide coal linkage to various power projects in the State.

The minister said the State Government was searching for suitable locations to set up the proposed power plants.

"We have got a list of suitable sites available in various regions from the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board and we will indentify the locations soon,” he said.

The Government has to examine the feasibility in terms of availability of both water and land," the minister said.

He also indicated that the size of the proposed plants is yet to be decided.

He said the Union Government had given a positive assurance to Karnataka of providing coal linkage if it comes out with proposals for setting up new thermal power plants.

"We are trying to use this opportunity to set up the new power plants to increase the State’s installed power capacity," he said.

In addition to allotting a coal block in Orissa for the proposed 1,320-MW thermal power project in Gulbarga, he said the Centre had also advised the State to take up the Phase-II of the project.

However, there was a shortage of about 300 acres in the project site at Gulbarga for taking up the Phase-II of the project. The State Government would acquire the remaining land, he said.

Shivakumar said that the Centre had given direction to the Coal India to allot coal on a preferential basis for the third generating unit of the Bellary Thermal Power Station with a capacity of 800 MW.

Similarly, the Union Ministry of Power had also recommended to the Coal Ministry to provide coal linkage to the second generating unit of Yeramarus thermal power plant.

With this, both the power plants would be set up within the prescribed deadline, he added.

    Yes VR, US-
Along with that we have to Tap the Natural Resources like Solar Power, Wind Power & Bio Gas produced from garbage as well.
With the Fraction of Land required by Polluting Thermal Plants, Solar can provide a day time grid boost while other sources could be used in the Night.
An Indian in US has developed "Bloom Box" technology, which produces clean energy by using Bio, CNG or LNG, which is fed from one side & energy is produced without(burning) polluting CO2 but water vapors as bye product.
It replaces acres & acres of solar panel site with one half of Tennis Court in size. It consumes half the gas than combustion process as well.
A small hand held unit is sufficient to power a Home! The size of Diesel Generators now placed outside high rise apartments can energize the whole building.
His clients are Google, Fed-ex, Walmart, Staples, Ebay, PG & E out of 20 companies he had installed, which are performing very efficiently with US government subsidizing 20% tax break for installing this GREEN Energy.

Most appropriate REGION must be chosen for 2 thermal power plants.
Places that may cause least harm to people should be the criteria.
Good development plans with most appropriate methods will yield best results.

Why can't they create a new all-weather port in Honnavar or Tadadi of UK dist and set-up a mega gas based power plant back there. According to a new US based research, "Power plants that use natural gas and a new technology to squeeze more energy from the fuel release far less of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide than coal-fired power plants do, according to a new analysis accepted for publication Jan. 8 in the journal Earth’s Future, a journal of the American Geophysical Union." And, gas is available in India, in the Middle-East and US is also exporting gas. Karnataka badly needs another all-weather port similar to NMPT and UK is the ideal place which will also bring development and employment to that region as well. Gas tanker ships can carry gas into the port which can be connected through pipelines to the power plant that can be set up not too far from the port. When it comes to infrastructure projects UPA has failed miserably during their two terms and is taking wrong decisions.
