Udupi, Mar 3: The much awaited ICYM ‘Youth Fest–2014’ was celebrated by the youth of Udupi diocese on Sunday March 2 at Milagres College Grounds under the leadership of central council, Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM), of the diocese of Udupi.
Fr Mary Joseph, Karnataka regional youth director, flagged off the peace rally near Mount Rosary Church, Santhekatte, after the Eucharistic mass.
The youth fest was presided over by Dr Baptist Menezes, vicar general of diocese of Udupi while Fr Joseph inaugurated the fest. Dr Neri Cornelio, principal, Milagres College, Kallianpur, Fr Fredrick D’Souza, director, Kallianpur deanery, were the chief guests. Fr Edwin D’Souza, director, Ivan D’Silva, president, ICYM, Diocese of Udupi, Waylon Machado, secretary, Leslie Aroza, animator, and Lester Pais, president, Kallianpur deanery, were present on the dais.
“As youth are very talented they should come to the mainstream of the society. We have to build our Holy Catholic Church. Even I feel like dancing and acting, but I have already lost my youthfulness. When we are young, we must use our youthfulness in a proper manner,” said Dr Baptist Menezes, vicar general, Diocese of Udupi, in his address.
Ivan D’Silva welcomed the gathering while Lester Pais gave the vote of thanks and Renal D’Souza and Averil compered the inauguration function.
Contests in mime, dancing and singing, face painting, carving, quiz, collage, pick and act, best-out-of-waste, and ‘Rangoli’ were held throughout the day. Shirva parish won the overall championship while Milagres came second and Pamboor parish third.
Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, the Bishop of Udupi Diocese, paid a surprise visit and addressed the youth. He congratulated Fr Edwin D’Souza and the entire council for organizing such events for the youth of the diocese.
The Bishop was accompanied by Fr Stany B Lobo, rector of Milagres Cathedral, and Walter Pinto, vice-president, parish council, Milagres Cathedral.
Fr Fredrick D’Souza, director, ICYM, Kallianpur deanery, presided over the valedictory function. Pramod Madhwaraj, MLA of Udupi, Fr Mary Joseph, Karnataka regional youth director, Fr Alwyn, former national ICYM, Fr Edwin D’Souza, director, Ivan D’Silva, president, ICYM, Diocese of Udupi, Waylon Machado, secretary, Leslie Aroza, animator, and Lester Pais, president of Kallianpur deanery, were present on the occasion.
Pramod Madhwaraj said that whenever ICYM youth approached him he never sent them back empty-handed.
Fr Joseph, in his address, said, “Education, riches, or power will not teach us how to live in the society. But organization will surely teach us how to live in the society.” Citing the example of the national ICYM president who is from a corner of the country, he said, “When she attended her first programme she didn’t even speak a few lines. But today, she can address a huge gathering. That is what ICYM gives us.”
Fr Alwyn and Fr Fredrick D’Souza echoed these views. Ivan D’Silva welcomed the gathering while Waylon Machado gave the vote of thanks. Roshan and Averil compered the valedictory function.
About 500 youth from nearly 30 parishes of the diocese participated in the event. Daijiworld.com was the official web media partner of the event, while U-Channel was the telecast partner and Big FM 92.7 was the official radio partner.
It was also announced that on the occasion of Easter, Sunday April 20, under the leadership of ICYM, the Udupi central council will organize the first ‘Prajoth D’Sa Musical Nite’ on Udupi Church grounds.
