Bangalore, Feb 28: The All India Congress Committee has appointed Nitesh Nimbalkar from the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee as the Returning Officer to conduct the internal election to select the candidate for the Bangalore North Lok Sabha constituency scheduled to be held on March 13.
Nimbalkar would come to the city and make preparations for holding the internal elections, says a press release from the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee.
Former Union Railway Minister C K Jaffer Sharief and State Youth Congress President Rizwan Arshad are the strong contenders for the Congress party ticket from the Bangalore North Lok Sabha Constituency, which has a sizeable Muslim voters.
The other constituency for which the party is holding internal election is Mangalore Lok Sabha elections.
The AICC is conducting this experiment in 15 select Lok Sabha constituencies at the instance of Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi.
The electoral college for the elections numbering 500 comprises the president of the Block Congress Committee president, party MLAs, MLCs, unsuccessful candidates in the previous elections, chiefs of frontal organisations and office bearers of the unit within the jurisdiction.
The party workers seeking a ticket to contest in the Lok Sabha elections could file their nominations and the person, who gets elected would be the natural choice for the seat.
Meanwhile, the announcement of the AICC Returning Officer in respect of the internal party election for selecting the Congress candidate from the Mangalore Lok Sabha constituency is expected anytime soon.
Former Union Minister B Janardhana Poojary and Union Minister M Veerappa Moily’s son, Harsha Moily, are strong contenders for the party ticket from the constituency.
