Udupi, Feb 28: A Tata Indigo car plunged about 20 ft off the road and caught fire at Dendurkatte near Kaup here in the early hours of Friday February 28. The driver of the car had a providential escape thanks to his presence of mind.

Prasad Alevoor was driving his friend's car from Hejamady to Alevoor when the accident took place at around 4 am.

It is said that when Prasad reached near Dendurkatte bridge, he veered to the side of the road to give way for a bike approaching from the opposite direction. The wheels of the car slipped over the edge of the road and got stuck.

Prasad, sensing danger, immediately got out of the car and went to nearby houses to get ropes to pull the car back off the edge.

However, just moments after he alighted from the car, the vehicle rolled down the steep and caught fire as it plunged down about 20 ft.

No injuries were reported in the incident, however, the loss is estimated at Rs 6 lac.

Kaup police have registered a case.

Vehicle slipped because of gravel on the roadside.
While parking at the steep place always with the hand brake, your vehicle should be in 1st Gear. (No 3rd, 4th or Neutral)

A few points to be noted while driving.
    # Slowdown while giving side to an opposite vehicle if it is not a highway.
    # Put hand-brake while car parked or got stuck at any edge of the road.
    # Always maintain speed and distance between vehicles, especially driving at night.
    # Attentiveness and observation is more important while driving(avoid using mobile-phone or smoking)
    # Always use good tires, especially the front-one should be new.
