Mangalore: Gulf NRI Forum urges resumption of direct flight to Kuwait

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Feb 27: Gulf NRI Forum-Kuwait and Tulu Koota Kuwait, expressing surprise and shock at the sudden withdrawal of Air India Express flights between Mangalore and Kuwait last week, have urged the union minister for civil aviation to resume this flight operation.

Addressing a press conference in the city on Wednesday February 27, Pascal Pinto, Gulf NRI Forum-Kuwait president, said that scores of people from the region are put to difficulties because of the decision of Air India Express to withdraw its flight operating on Mangalore-Kuwait route.

"Approximately 1.5 lac people from this region are in Kuwait alone. They travel to their native places at least once a year. This number does not include NRIs not registered with any of our associations and hence these numbers may be twice this number. Many passengers are forced to take other private airlines with connecting flights to the Gulf. This surely is a loss to government carriers like Air India and Indian Airlines. Lack of direct flight to Mangalore from the Gulf will affect the growth of tourism in the coastal region," he said.

He demanded either the resumption of this flight, or sincere efforts to get private international aviation firms to operate flights from the city to Kuwait. He informed that petitions containing these demands had already been handed over to union minister, M Veerappa Moily, union civil aviation minister, and MLA representing the city.

President of Konkan Overseas Returness Walfare Association (KORWA) Louis lobo, former chairman of Mangalore Urban Development Authority, Tejomaya and John Tauro were present.

Banned medicines

Pascal Pinto has asked the passengers to be very cautious while carrying medicines to Kuwait. “Several tablets that are banned for use in Kuwait are freely available in India. Some people living in that country routinely get these medicines from India through relatives or friends travelling to Kuwait. But some of them suffer avoidable ordeal once they reach Kuwait for possessing contraband medicines,” he explained.

He suggested for carrying documents bearing the signatures of medical practitioners if taking these medications becomes unavoidable. He warned that the persons carrying the medicines may be subjected to stringent punishment including imprisonment and deportation if the records in support of the medicines are found to be improper during police interrogation.

Fake visa agents

Pascal also pointed out about some educated youngsters travelling abroad, lured by the high paying jobs there, getting caught with fake visas and spending their lives inside Kuwait jails. He warned about some agents who dupe these people with fake visas. He suggested for getting the copies of visas and other records verified at the respective embassies for their genuineness before undertaking trips to foreign countries.

Memorandum

In a memorandum submitted to the union civil aviation minister, Tulu Koota Kuwait stated that the sudden decision of Air India Express to cancel this flight, which used to operate thrice a week, has created problems for over a lac of people from coastal Karnataka working in Kuwait. The memorandum pointed out that these passengers will be put to more problems and will be compelled to spend additional money if they have to go to some other airports like Mumbai to reach Kuwait, and has therefore requested the minister to resume this flight immediately.

    Well Said Vishal.
The same people who blame our national carrier with minute errors, now shows agony. People can stand in line for hours if required in the gulf, dare to enter E-gate or GCC national counter as i do all the time, in India they need VIP treatment. They think its their birth right. Dear Friends unless you have deserved something you can't have it.

My friends should do some introspection about their comments in these columns. This is not limited to those who fly on the Mangalore-Kuwait Sector but generally I have come across comments from passengers who go out of their way to criticize Air India Express. First of all, let me clarify that I am not holding a brief for Air India, but at the slightest inconvenience, these columns are flooded with mails condemning the airline. I travel regularly by Air India Express both on their international as well as domestic flights and barring a few instances here and there, I do not find anything seriously wrong with their service. Their on time performance has improved by leaps and bounds and the inflight service is also of a high standard. I agree that at times their service falls short of our expectations, but the same is true of the private airlines also.

I remember a couple of years back I was travelling by Kingfisher Airlines from Dubai to India and the response of the air hostess when I asked for an extra can of beer was unbelievable. It was disgusting, to say the least. Now, coming to the point whenever there is some deficiency in service, all hell breaks loose and people scream at the top of their voices promising not to travel by Air India Express. And I am sure it is the same people who are now complaining that this is our national carrier and they are duty bound to carry the Indians even when the sector is not profitable to the airline. My friends, where does this patriotism go whenever we are put to some sort of inconvenience? Why don't we think then that it is our national carrier and as Indians we are also duty bound to patronize and support it?

Strange are the ways of our people. When it operated, AIE was vilified and cited as the worst etc. Now its withdrawn and there is clamor for reinstatement. The best way to ensure continuance was to give continued patronage to AIE.

Kuwait - Mangalore flight is empty most of the time, except during the X'mas season. It is better to fly Jet Airways to Mumbai and Kuwait from Mangalore. Service on Jet Airways is certainly better.

12- Shri Vinaya Kumar Sorake – Minister, Urban Development, Karnataka
13-Shri Ivan D’Souza – KPCC Gen. Secretary, Karnataka
14- Shri JT Radhakrishna – Airport Director, Mangalore
    15-Manager – Air India, Kuwait
16-Manager – Air India Express, Mangalore

Prominent Coastal NRIs in Kuwait have spoken to most of the above mentioned Ministers, MPs and other VIPs to discuss this matter with Aviation Minister and we are expecting their urgent intervention in this matter on top priority basis.
It is with sad that our only travelling option from Kuwait to Mangalore, AIR INDIA EXPRESS is winding up its flight services from February 15, 2014 throwing travel plans of more than 150,000 expatriates from Coastal Karnataka, Mangalore and Northern Parts of Kerala into disarray. It is quite obvious that we are disappointed facing extreme difficulties in maintaining our travel plans to Mangalore and Northern parts of Kerala.
With AIE wrapping up its services to Mangalore route, travel woes of Indian Expats are surely going to worsen during the Summer season in 2014. As this sector is one of the revenue generating routes, private Airlines can come forward to introduce their flight services to KUWAIT-MANGALORE sector. By deciding winding up services to this sector, AIE has put the passengers in trouble. The yearly average of 120 passengers per flight in this sector is an encouraging figure for any private airlines.
In view of our difficulties, we kindly request Aviation Minister to intervene in this matter on an urgent basis in this matter.
We kindly also request the Aviation Minister to consider granting permission to other Airlines such as JET AIRWAYS to operate their flight services to KUWAIT-MANGALORE on top priority basis.
Cooperation from JET AIRWAYS top management is also kindly requested.

Nice to see Oversees Returnees from Kuwait are in action.

Thanks to daijiworld at least this time you gave the coverage, whereas Coastal NRIs here in Kuwait collectively through several organizations have been pressuring the issue through concerned authorities since last three months.

The need of the hour is Aviation Ministry of India instruct Air India Express Management to retain their flight services to KUWAIT – MANGALORE sector as it is a profitable sector and at the same time Aviation Ministry of India consider granting PERMISSION to other private airlines like JET AIRWAYS to operate their flight services to KUWAIT – MANGALORE sector. Aviation Ministry has a social obligation to intervene in this matter on TOP PRIORITY basis as more than 150000 passengers from Coastal Karnataka, surrounding districts and from Northern parts of Kerala are disappointed here in Kuwait as Air India Express has wrapped up its flight services to this sector. The reasons cited by Air India Express for wrapping up its services to this sector are not acceptable to our passengers.

Follow Up by United Associations, Kuwait (UAKK)

Please note below, that we United Associations of Karnataka, Kuwait (UAKK) an Umbrella Organization of 12 Karnataka State Associations including KEA Kasaragod Expat Association here in Kuwait have submitted a MEMORANDUM to Aviation Minister Shri Ajit Sing on 16th December, 2013 to instruct Air India Express to retain their flight service to Kuwait – Mangalore Sector and also grant permission for JET AIRWAYS to operate their flight services so that the passengers from Coastal Karnataka, from surrounding districts and passengers from Northern part of Kerala will have more than one travel option to KUWAIT – MAGNGALORE Sector. We have submitted a collective memo to Chairman - JET AIRWAYS on 7th Feb. 2014.

    SOFT REMINDER:

Dear Aviation Minister Shri Ajit Sigh Ji – Kindly note that we UNITED ASSOCIATIONS OF KARNATAKA, Kuwait (UAKK) an Umbrella Organization of 12 Associations in Kuwait and Kasaragod Expats Association (KEA) have brought to your kind attention regarding our Travelling concerns and difficulties to Kuwait-Mangalore sector through our joint memorandum dated 16th December, 2013 signed by the presidents of 12 Associations. This memorandum has been copied to the following dignitaries:

    1. Shri K.C. Venugopl – State Aviation Minister, Ministry of Aviation, New Delhi
    2. Shri Veerappa Moily – Minister, Ministry of Petroleum products & natural gas -New Delhi

    4. Shri B. Janardhan Poojary – Ex. Union Minister

    Well said Mr. Pinto
First of all it is necessary to have a direct flight from Kuwait to Mangalore.
Yes, you are right Mr. Pinto, it is very necessary to spread awareness to all people who are carrying medicines which are prohibited in these countries (Middles East)and carrying excess medicines is also not allowed.
So if your relative or friend gives any parcel, please open and see and find out what type of medicines they are.
Carrying such medicines or any excess medicines is a serious crime.
    So be alert.

Since the national carrier has withdrawn flights, through RTI, one must find out what reasons have been cited for the withdrawal.

Also compare what is the traffic to neighboring Kerala Port, where the services are intact.

In solidarity, all other gulf country associations, must pressurize the carrier to resume.
They may have the facility now, but similar fate may await them in the future.

Main reason for cancellation is passengers of Kozhikode wanted a direct flight instead of via Mangalore, just as they have direct flights to Kochi and Trivandrum. Be it flight or train these people always vouch for a lion’s share. Now it’s time that we should demand a Mangalore only flight. Doesn’t matter if it is twice a week.

Now, people need AIE, but when it was there you always see negative comments and criticism about it. Whatever it is AIE is the only airline, which people will always depend on, be it low cost fare or high cost fare, even if there was an option of another direct flight to Mangalore people will still choose AIE.this is what is happening in the UAE as well.
Our people, especially mangalorean's always like to complain and complain.....
