Last year, the government had either accepted resignations or given marching orders to the presidents of various academies or chairpersons of authorities in the state, and then failed to post suitable candidates in these vacancies for about nine months. It has appointed people to 13 top posts and memberships of different academies and authorities.
As per the order, the term of the new presidents and members will be three years or till further orders in this respect that may be issued by the government henceforth, whichever is earlier.
The presidents and chairpersons of academies and various authorities had either voluntarily tendered resignations or were asked to vacate their posts, after the new Congress-led government rose to power in Karnataka last year. The exercise of appointing people to these posts had been initiated in all earnestness.
Although names were finalized for all the academies barring Tulu, Konkani, Beary and Kodava academies by December last, the government wanted to wait to extract opinions of local MPs before finalizing names for these four academies. The process got delayed as mainly there were marked differences over the issue between different MPs from the state’s coast.
The list was finalized over a week ago, and sent to the chief minister (CM) for his approval. However, it is learnt that all those who have been appointed as presidents and members of academies this time are fresh, not having worked in these posts in the past. The government wants to give opportunities to fresh faces to enable them to show their mettle, it is learnt. With the CM affixing his signature to the list on Wednesday, these academies are expected to resume meaningful activities without delay and utilize unutilized budgetary allocations soon.
