Karkala, Feb 23: The suspicious death of Maline Poojary of Shirlalu, Ajekar was a case of suicide, confirmed post-mortem reports. Reliable sources said that Malini consumed poison to kill herself after her husband took another woman's side during a quarrel.
The preliminary investigation has revealed that Jyothi Hegde, a woman from the neighbourhood, a divorcee with two children, visited Malini's house on Thursday, after which a quarrel started between the two women.
Police sources said that a hushed conversation between Jyothi and Malini's husband Ashok Jain irked Malini. The fact that Jyothi is a divorcee made Malini more anxious, the police sources said.
Malini who did not like Jyothi having hushed conversations with her husband asked her to leave the house. The two women thus began quarrelling. However, Ashok instead of taking his wife's side, reportedly supported Jyothi, which was an insult to Malini.
Disturbed with what her husband did, Malini might have consumed poison, said police sources after interrogating Ashok who was arrested following the mysterious death of his wife.
When contacted, assistant superintendent of police Annamalai said that the police have interrogated Ashok. "We will also quiz Jyothi and investigate her role in the case and also if she was interfering in the marital life of Ashok and Malini. A special team has been formed to investigate the case," he said.
Malini Poojary, who was five months pregnant, died under suspicious circumstances on Thursday February 20. Her husband Ashok Jain was arrested. Malini's parents accused Ashok and his parents of harassing and torturning Malini for dowry, which they said led to her death.
