Getting innovative with 'time': Gold hidden in watch seized at Mangalore Airport

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Feb 19: After belt, hooks and wafer tin, it was now the turn of wrist watch to become a carrier of smuggled gold at Mangalore International Airport.

The officers of customs at Mangalore International Airport on Wednesday February 19 seized one kg gold bar and one circular gold piece coated with silver paint totally weighing 1116.400 gms valued at Rs 34,58,512.

The gold was brought by way of mis-declaration and concealment inside a watch and further concealed in a bag by a passenger identified as Muhammed Musthafa Eriyapadi Pallindakukkal, a resident of Kasaragod.

Musthafa arrived at Mangalore International Airport on Wednesday at around 7.30 am by Air India Express flight IX 814 from Dubai. The passenger was arrested and produced before the magistrate.

This was the first time that the officers detected a case wherein gold was concealed in a watch. The watch was found to be in working condition and the gold was moulded to fit perfectly under the dial to make it appear like a normal watch.

I am sure these people are being used as carriers and they are working for their boss. Customs/ crime branch officials should catch the real boss through these carriers in case they want to stop the smuggling. If the catch contributes to the government exchequer significantly, then probably catch as much as you can. Good Luck either way.

Mostly the passengers flying through Mangalore have underestimated the capacity of our custom officers who look after the smuggling. So much gold is caught in the airport daily of middle east flights which is beyond our imagination.Hope the customs do the needful to nab the culprits carrying illegal gold effectively.Thanq.

It has already been done just a couple of weeks ago, unfortunately not reported by DW by the other website. Gold dust was hidden in the capsules several dozens of which were swallowed by the smuggler. He passed through the customs, but was sick and admitted to the hospital where it had to come out the way you have described.

It shows kerala airport not taking much action for gold smuggling . that's why kerela is very rich. with the same practice of kerala airport these people are bringing gold through mangalore also. At least this Mangalore airport could allow mangloreans to bring gold so that mangalorians become rich soon. I hope customs will show excuse on us next.

Smugglers are giving away lot of their secret methods and it will be slightly difficult for them to smuggle easily now onwards all that gold. But they will get around the problem soon enough. Till now they may have smuggled so much, this loss may be nothing to them. One must realize these are only carriers. Most of the workers in the gulf may not be in a position to buy so much of gold, which confirms it is sent through these passengers for a fee.
Only, these passengers when caught will be suffering.
