Kundapur, Feb 19: In an incident which occurred in Katbeltoor village in Hemmady in the taluk on the night of Tuesday February 18, a house along with items stored inside, turned into ashes. The house belonged to Amit Beary, a resident of Katbeltoor.
Beary had gone out on Tuesday evening in connection with his business, while his wife, Vasant Kharvi, was in Hemmady for selling fish as usual. Their daughter, Divya, who works in the taluk headquarters, returned in the evening. She lit a kerosene lamp near the firewood hearth for beginning cooking, and went out to get water.
As the kerosene lamp accidentally overturned, kerosene spilled, and fire spread to a heap of firewood stored nearby within seconds. As the fire raged, onlookers were wary of entering it, as they were afraid that gas cylinder kept inside might explode.
Fire brigade was called thereafter. The fire personnel succeeded in dousing the fire after some efforts. However, along with house, gold ornaments, clothes, documents relating to ownership of land, and other things were gutted by then. Total loss in this incident runs into lacs of rupees, it is said.
