An IIT-Manipal 'Twitter war' over Microsoft chief Satya Nadella

An IIT-Manipal 'Twitter war' over Microsoft chief Satya Nadella

Feb 10 (NDTV): With Indian-American Satya Nadella making it to the top job at Microsoft, many at his alma-mater Manipal Institute of Technology celebrated on Twitter, saying this goes against the perception that only students from India's premier institutions - Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) - make it to the top.

"Nadella becomes Microsoft CEO. MIT wins over IIT-KGP #MoralVictory #OkaySorry #Manipal (sic)," tweeted Tanmay Srivastava, a student from Manipal Institute of Technology.

"Interesting that new Microsoft #CEO is from Manipal & not IIT. No taxpayer funded education for #SatyaNadella. More MITs needed?, (sic)" tweeted a person named Sanjay.

"Satya Nadella's elevation will do wonders to the Manipal brand. For once, a business hyper-achiever is not an IIT alum (sic)," tweeted Vivek Sengupta.

Born and raised in Hyderabad, Nadella, 46, studied at Hyderabad Public School and earned his engineering degree from the Manipal Institute of Technology.

"Satya's case should be an eye-opener to parents who are obsessed with brands like IIT, IIM because he is neither of the two and am sure his parents did not obsess over it. They allowed him space to blossom in whatever route he took," said Colonel RS Khatri, principal, Hyderabad public school.

Students of IIT, however, downplayed the reactions.

"It is a kind of Twitter war that's going on between the MITians and the IITians. Frankly speaking, this is overrated. We have seen that there have been eminent personalities emerging from both MIT and IITs and even in some cases the state universities," said Himanshu Pandey, a student of IIT Kanpur.

"I don't think that to be successful, you just have to be an IITian. Like, IIT can give you sufficient condition to be successful but it is not the necessary condition," said another IIT Kanpur student Abhimanyu Arora.

Be it IIT, MIT or any other institute of excellence, achievers like Nadella - who is now only the third leader in the 300-billion dollar software company's 38-year history - make India proud.

Ha... Ha... Alwyn, It has been crashing since DOS age. It is boring to see "Your action performed an illegal Operation. " Afterwards there will be a "X" button to close. Nothing else. Till today Windows display the screen so called "BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH".

Microsoft is another name for "Monopoly Masters". MicroSoft (MS) is often quoted as M$. Why ?

I just saw Satya Nadellas profile at Microsoft site yesterday. There it, says Microsoft to increase the Security aspect of Windows and to start Windows NT recruited Nadella who worked at SUN Microsystems and expert of UNIX to Microsoft fold.
Thereby Microsoft agreed that UNIX is stronger. So if features of UNIX are directly added to Windows, it will be UNIX. They want to add UNIX features indirectly. That means COPYING indirectly.

I want my friend Sunil of Qatar to read profiles of Satya Nadella at Microsoft site and also about US Vs Microsoft, EU Vs Microsoft, SUN Vs Microsoft at Wikipedia and Google.

Google may also give a photo of Bill Gates, who caught by police at his teenage for violating traffic rules. Later he violated the rules of all legal business.

I don't agree with the first paragraph. I got into MIT through a high CET ranking (230). So did most of my classmates. They do have management quotas (not based on caste) but an equal amount of merit seats too. Get your facts right.

You are right in the second paragraph though.

Hi,Mr Robin, Do not get upset, Microsoft was built on a vision to revolutionize the way we live in today. Problems do happen and lots of undercutting to stay on top of the commercialized world today to keep the shareholders happy . Heard of Skype ?? most probably you are using the same, was invented by 2 Estonian boys, I was shell shocked at one of the seminars in Qatar ,to know that till date India does not have any original product for the world. and we have computer engineers and scientist equaling the population of Estonia. this is not my research, but straight out of the mouth of a scientist from Bangalore who had come to deliver a message in Qatar.

According to one of my classmates who is scientist at ISRO, on his return from Belgium after a training program, was lamenting on the sorry state of our R&D. We have the resources ,talents but need a drive ,a motivation, good thought full leaders like our Ex president, Mr APJ Abdul kalam, to instill the drive in the hearts of young mind to build and develop companies for the world from India. We need to change our education system, to be more practical oriented and have books like wings of fire on the curriculum , I am sure on day during our lifetime we will have great companies in India for the world.

I do not understand if Mr. Satya Nadella becomes CEO of Microsoft what are the Indians going to get?? Has he promised Indian Youngsters job in US (in Microsoft)? We have a very bad habit of gossiping. Let us first see what is happening in AAP today and let us elect & a good Leader for our country. Last week I was reading in The Times of India about his annual Salary. There are so many poor people in our country nobody is bothered about them. After all what is this all bull...t.

Hi Robin from byndoor, Nice comments, Just made me wonder if you have written this article from your mind or heart,or for the heck of writing something to get noticed. Believe me, on thing in life we need is to appreciate and not criticize , be proud ,we have a person from Indian origin to be on top of global powerhouse. Its a honor for our country. Meanwhile, I hope someday you will be able to motivate your child as done by satya nadella's pop to reach to the top,to make you &India proud in the world. Some day we will be able to read on the Washington post that under Satya nadella leadership Microsoft has reached all time heights.

Ha... Ha... Now our Moodlakatte Institute of Technology at Kundapura Railway station also says it as MIT. Of course the founder of this I.M.Jayarama Shetty, Ex-MP also the student of MIT-Manipal.

Satya Nadella became SOMETHING at Microsoft. But What is Microsoft ? It is a company CONQUERED the software market by crookedness. Microsoft Windows and its applications were a headache for the IT guys. Microsoft is not an example of a NOBLE company. They killed lot of young developing companies. If not able to compete with, Microsoft either tried to kill them or purchased them.

Microsoft invented NOTHING. They learnt only to COPY. But they denied others to to do the same "COPYING".

If a farmer grows a quintal of Brinjal. He can sell or get money for a Quintal of Brinjal only. But Microsoft gets the same amount of money for their Windows or any other S..T piece, they charge the same rate for the COPY. Money accumulated for Microsoft but Farmer should get the money again if he grows Brinjal or anything again after months.

Microsoft is a US company. US govt itself fired Antitrust suit against that company. Microsoft fought with SUN microsystems over manipulating Java in court for many years. Microsoft story is not a story to be told with happiness.

In spite of all these things all are praising Satya who became TOP of Microsoft.

OK. Recommend him for Noble Prize and a free Bharat Ratna also.

Nobody appreciates their trust & confidence for honoring this Indian with such a dignified post.

Personally, I don't care whether he is Indian or US citizen Only narrow minded people think in terms of geo-classification Can we remove this barrier in our mind ? How does it matter which country he belongs to ?? Good for Nadella to have that position if he can lead the corporation.
Also MIT or IIT, education is commercialized product. It's a prospective how the product is visualized. Also education is one of the one the criteria and not the end itself. It is must a means to an end. If there is no entrepreneurship, determination, hard work and motivation, it does not matter which institute one studies. Also note some of the best great business people are least studied

Sir that is what I meant to say, but generally there should be no doubt that the quality from IIT is outstanding and they have a strong head start advantage in the job field!! But, as you said, after the launch the propulsion depends on so many factors luck/destiny included for one to reach the helm!!

Reminded of the very brilliant and smart and most prospective candidate for CEO post in Infosys who actually has made the biggest contribution to it in its formative years had to quit under embarrassing circumstances!!!

In short, one cannot predict anybody just by seeing his degrees and academics, there are a few examples among the numerous I gave in my previous post!!

    Thanks for your views!!

Having graduated from MIT, I think the general international university atmosphere in Manipal does help in developing soft skills. Good soft skills did set me apart from most graduates of other local universities who, despite their better grades, were not really able to apply themselves or were too shy. This comes out easily during interviews or when working in teams. I think Manipal graduates will agree.

Congrats to Nadellaji on this great achievement!!

No doubt it is a great achievement for an Indian born to head one of the top IT company in the world, but there is no comparison of MIT with IIT!!!

On the subject, there are 100s of such examples of our fellow Indians, which are not in the lime light, especially entrepreneurs who have created a humungous amount of wealth both for them and their shareholders and employees who were alumnus's of not so famous institutions like Dr. Anji Reddy, who started Dr. Reddy's Labs, Glenmark Labs, Sun Pharma, Biocon, Paras Pharma, Patni Computers, Hotmail founder, Lulu group, and so many more!!! The recent one that comes to mind is Dhiraj Rajaram who is a product of Guindy Engg. College who found Mu Sigma in 2004 and last year his co. was valued at 1 billion dollars by virtue of Mastercard taking stake in it!!! Some of these achievers were from very humble and poor backgrounds, making their achievements just mind boggling super duper!!!

It is simple to understand. It is not because of MIT or IIT, for that matter IIT entry is through merit and MIT entry is based on money-pal or money-friend.
US doesn't have reservation and caste based system, so meritorious candidates quite easily make it to the top regardless of their age, origin & skin color (Obama, Nadella to name a few). India is plagued with casteism, which leads to the reservation, which then leads to corruption & favoritism and that is the true problem of India.

He has left India for good, 22 years back

He is what he is today, because of the United States, then why are we Indians going ga ga about his MIT or Hyderabad studies or for that matter even his Indian Background.

He has never mentioned anything about Manipal or Hyderabad or India in any of his Interviews.
