Udupi, Feb 9: Pending cheques were distributed to Brahmavar sugar factory workers and farmers at the Bharath Nirman programme jointly organized by the Press Information Bureau, other media divisions of broadcasting ministry, district administration and the zilla panchayat on Sunday February 9 at the SMS Community Hall here.
The cheques were handed over by union minister for transport Oscar Fernandes and his wife Blossom.
Addressing the gathering, Oscar said, "The government with an aim to provide education to every child in the country, and employment to every individual has implemented various revolutionary programmes. Such progressive steps will help to eradicate poverty in India and empower its people."
"The labourers contributed a lot to the sugar factory. The Varahi project that was set up after the sugar factory was beneficial to the people as it provided them potable water," he added.
On this occasion Udupi district incharge minister Vinay Kumar Sorake, MP Jayaprakash Hegde, MLA Pramod Madhwaraj, DC Dr M T Reju, parish priest of SMS Church Fr Davis Lawrence Crasta were present.
Former ZP president Bhujanga Shetty, ZP CEO M Kanagavalli, assistant secretary Pranesh Rao, Blossom Fernandes, director of Press Information Bureau Vasuda Gupta, Nagendra Swamy, additional director general H S Venkateshwar, Jayasheela Shetty of Brahmavar sugar factory, MLA of Byndoor Gopal Poojary, M A Gafoor and others were present.
