Bangalore, Feb 5: Children of construction workers studying in high schools, pre-university courses and degree colleges will be given scholarships of Rs 10,000, Rs 15,000 and Rs 25,000 per annum from this year.
The scholarships will be given by Karnataka’s Labour Department, announced Minister of State for Labour P T Parameshwara Naik in Bangalore on Wednesday.
The minister said scholarship amount would be deposited in bank accounts of students. Parents of students should be registered as construction workers under the construction workers welfare board.
The amount would be given from the welfare board from this academic year, he said.
He said a total of six lakh construction workers have been registered under the Board and a target has been set aside to increase the number to 12 lakh by March 2014.
The Board has collected Rs 2270 crore in the form of cess from the construction workers.
The officials of the department have been instructed to visit construction sites to increase the number of registration of workers, he said.
