Bangalore, Feb 4: Seeking a crackdown illegal land grabbers in and around Bangalore, Gandhian freedom fighter H S Doreswamy led a team to stage a protest in front of the office of Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T B Jayachandra and demanded stern action against land encroachers on Tuesday.
The other members of the team included former legislator A T Ramaswamy, environmentalist A N Yellappa Reddy and several others.
They urged the State Government to take steps to obtain the President Pranab Mukherjee's assent for the Karnataka Land Grabbing (Prohibition) Bill, 2007, which was passed by both Houses of the State legislature during the H D Kumaraswamy government.
The President has not given his nod to the Bill.
Though the State Government has provided clarifications and the Centre had returned the Bill, sources said.
Doreswamy said several land developers grabbed lands in and around the Bangalore for development real estate.
The State Government has not given serious thought to the recover of lands identified by the joint legislature committee headed by A T Ramaswamy which submitted report to the Government in 2007.
The minister, who received a memorandum from Doreswamy, promised that the government would take the issue seriously and pass necessary laws to curb illegal encroachment of government lands in the State.
