Mangalore: Three smuggling attempts thwarted at airport, gold worth Rs 65 lac seized

Mangalore, Feb 4: In a bumper catch at Mangalore International Airport on Tuesday February 4, the officials of customs thwarted attempts by passengers to smuggle gold in three separate cases. Gold totally worth Rs 65.29 lacs was seized.
In the first case, the officers seized 13 gold coils, totally weighing 999.650 grams, valued at Rs 29,78,957 from a passenger identified as Basheed Choori Abdul Rahiman, a resident of Uliyathadukka, Kasaragod.
The gold coils were concealed in an electric hot plate stove belonging to Basheed. He arrived at the airport on February at around 5.30 am by Jet Airways flight 9W531 from Dubai.
In the second case, the officers seized two gold wires totally weighing 699.900 grams, valued at Rs 20,85,702. The gold was
concealed in an aluminium frame around a suitcase belonging to passenger Nazar Thekkupuram, a resident of Thekkupuram, Pallikere, Kasaragod. Nazar arrived at the airport on the same day by 7.45 am Air India Express flight IX814 from Dubai.
In the third case, the officers seized four circular plates made of gold totally weighing 491.650 grams, valued at Rs 14,65,117.
The gold was concealed in two insulated hot cases that were found in the luggage of passenger Abdul Sathar Kasaragod, a resident of Pallikere, Kasaragod. He arrived at Mangalore International Airport the same day by 7.45 am Air India Express flight IX814 from Dubai.
Altogether, gold weighing 2,191.200 grams, valued at Rs 65,29,776 was seized in the three cases.
Further investigation is under progress in all the three cases. Operations were conducted under the supervision of Krishna Kumar Prasad, assistant commissioner of customs, Mangalore International Airport.
Of the above three accused, Basheed Choori Abdul Rahiman and Nazar Thekkupuram, both from Kasaragod, were arrested and produced before the judicial magistrate.
Further investigation is under progress, under the guidance of commissioner D Purushotham.
